ORDA's Biggest Wins

I don’t know if it counts as a win, because they were maybe a bit too far ahead of the curve (hard to believe, I know) on both… but ORDA operated lift served mountain biking and had on map “backcountry” ski terrain back at the turn of the century.

As for mountain biking, ORDA has seemingly moved away from that. Whiteface hasn't opened their bike park in years. Gore still has a joke of one. Was probably considered good when it opened, but just hasn't kept up with the times.

On the snowmaking front, despite the WUG, Gore still has a bunch of non-WUG trails that are totally buried. These are including but not limited to Sunway, Quicksilver, Pete's Paradise, Tahawus, Echo, and all the Dark Side trails.

It would be interesting to know why the report is opaque as you'd think that they'd want to trumpet the balance sheet. Is it just the way that state government works?

Like NY Thruway Authority and other NY "authorities," ORDA is semi-autonomous. This page on the NY government web site gives some insight.

As a relative novice, I don't feel qualified to comment too much in this thread.

But I will say one thing. I live about equidistant from Belleayre and Hunter. Even if the Epic Pass were a third of the price of the ORDA pass, I still wouldn't consider it (although I fully understand why others would.). My decision is almost entirely based on how poorly Hunter is run compared to Belle. They should be pretty comparable mountains. But while Belleayre exists as a public good for the people of the state, at this point in its existence, Hunter exists mostly just to suck the money from the veins of its customers. No, thanks.

Mods, if this feels political or trollish, feel free to delete.

Mount van Ho is open for mountain biking in the summer... Several of the xc trails are mowed, and there's singletrack too.

Another big win: The new World Cup trails, snowmaking, and lodge at Mt van Hoevenberg. Living up the the UMP, only 30 years in the making.

As Face4me mentioned, the world cup ski jumping was way, way above what I expected in terms of turnout. It was as big of a surprise to me as the attendance at Killington events about 7 years ago.
