ICE v Electric: Cost and Emissions

Why don't we have high speed rail in this country.

Asking anyone. We'd kick ass with that.
Because the people promoting it don't have the same amount money to "contribute" to our Congress Men and Senators as the oil, airlines, and car companies do.
When I go to Europe I don't even want a car. (Except may on the Autobahn on Sundays. 😉 )

The main reason is it is too expensive to build HSR in the USA. The secondary reason is there is not enough density or demand due to cars and air travel in most of the USA.

It is 500 miles from LA to SF and the current cost estimate is $135,000,000,000 (billion) or $270,000,000 (million) per mile. That is unconscionable.
China spent between $17million-$21million per mile and they have no interference from local landowners/local governments/state government and the system is basically uniform across China. China has accumulated $900billion debt and low usage due to ticket cost across most lines. It has been a drain on the Chinese economy.

"LOS ANGELES -- When California's "bullet train" was pitched to voters back in 2008, the cost of linking Los Angeles to San Francisco via high-speed rail was said to be about $40 billion.

But now, more than 15 years later, state officials say it's going to cost as much as $35 billion just to complete the 171-mile stretch between Bakersfield and Merced. Completing the entire line will require an additional $100 billion."

haven't looked at this either but the rumours i am aware of this is legit tech. Basically low charge the whole time you drive.
What's the cost per mile?

additional $100 billion
100 billion is 2% of the total us budget for one year?

$100 million is 0.00588235% of the $1.7 trillion 2023 Omnibus Spending Program signed Dec 2022
The California spending plan in 2023 was $308 billion.

Looks like this car is for sale:

I think the problem with the 100 billion number for that particular project is that the most likely outcome is that California will spend the money and still not have a functioning train. That article says they need 35 bil to finish the crappy first stage that goes from nowhere to nowhere. Supposedly it will take another 100 after that to finally connect LA and San Francisco. So the number is really 135 billion but the 100 is so far out in the future that nobody will ever be held to that number. It is a complete boondoggle.

More additional details to Jasonwx post above:
Tesla is shutting down their charging network team. This is a big deal especially when other automakers were looking to use the Supercharger system.

"Tesla’s move this week to lay off much of the team responsible for creating the largest and most successful electric-vehicle charging network in the U.S. threw the industry into a state of shock and confusion.

The layoffs halted construction work at a dozen Supercharger sites in Texas. In New York, property owners in negotiations with Tesla were told the company was withdrawing from discussions about adding chargers to their sites.

The upheaval comes as the EV industry struggles with sluggish sales growth and a bumpy rollout of a national highway-charging network.

The Tesla layoffs were sweeping and included employees in the sales force to those overseeing the construction of charging sites, according to people familiar with the decision. Contractors and executives at other automakers that have partnered with Tesla on charging described widespread confusion over the future of Tesla’s charging business.

Some of those laid off woke up Tuesday morning to find themselves locked out of the company computer system and learned about the layoffs in messages to their personal email accounts."
