Gore Mountain Conditions

Nice day and sun appeared at 11 but STICKY. Even Rumor like having the brakes thrown on. Getting 2" of snow last night then rain not helping.

Still worth it to get out.

Update. At 1:30ish Rumor and Lies got the sticky top layer skiied off and were primo the rest of the day. Both are developing nicely spaced moguls and had copious amounts of corn to harvest. ROTD was Rumor diving in off the spine on the headwall. Pure fun in there and that side of the trail down. Also spectacular day weather wise once it cleared out at 11.

Was worth it to go before things improved a little later in the afternoon but turned into a really great day once Rumor and Lies started yielding corn.

Don't think this will be my last day at Gore this season but want to get to K mart at least one weekend if not two as I have 4 IKON days left. Then have some work travel coming up to Sacramento last weekend of the month and you can bet I'm hitting Tahoe while I'm there. If today was my last Gore day, I'd take it.

I wasn't sure how things would turn out today, but I ended up with a cold bluebird day. Luckily, the April sun doesn't need it to be all that warm to do its thing, and anything that faced south or east eventually softened up.

I found the best skiing to be on Burnt Ridge and Topridge. The ski bowl was open with Oak Ridge only, and Straightbrook didn't soften until late in the afternoon. The front side was good too. Tahawus on the North Side had good grooming, but didn't soften and was the only trail open. I skipped High Peaks entirely due to none of the terrain softening up.

Run count as follows:

AE2 -> Showcase
AE2 -> Wild Air
AE2 -> Quicksilver
Sunway -> 3B
Sunway -> Pete's Paradise
AE2 -> Lower Sunway
AE2 -> Sleighride
AE2 -> Tahawus to Eagle's Nest
Burnt Ridge -> Echo

Lunch Break

AE2 -> Tahawus to Pipeline
Hudson -> Oak Ridge
Village -> Village Slope
Hudson -> Oak Ridge
Hudson -> Peaceful Valley to Eagle's Nest
Burnt Ridge -> Echo
Burnt Ridge -> Sagamore
Burnt Ridge -> Backwoods
Burnt Ridge -> Sagamore
Burnt Ridge -> Backwoods
Burnt Ridge -> Echo
AE2 -> Twister
Gondola -> Uncas
Topridge -> Topridge
Topridge -> Topridge
Topridge -> Uncas
Straightbrook -> Lies
Straightbrook -> Open Pit
Straightbrook -> Lies
Straightbrook -> Hawkeye
Straightbrook -> Cloud to Headwaters
Topridge -> Ruby to Twister
AE2 -> Lower Sunway

Total of 32

That’s a lot of runs, topridge was closed when I looked for it. I thought Uncas and open pit were good. As well as anything on lower mountain until it got a bit softer. I am weird where I rather hard pack then soft serve

Don't let a weather forecast change your plans too much, even just a few days in advance. The forecast even 24 hours ahead looked like it would be pretty rainy today, but the radar looked pretty clear this morning, so I decided to head up to Gore with my daughter who had the day off from school. Time was a little tight for us, and we didn't get there until almost 11 and were done before 3 because we had to be home by 4:30. Got in 10 runs without getting rained on at all, and even saw the sun for a while. Gore clearly had gotten a lot of rain and was unable to groom anything. If you had first tracks on anything it wasn't good but conditions improved a bit as the day went on with the (very light) skier traffic. It was the emptiest Gore parking lot I've seen in a long time. We started on the Gondola and headed right over to Burnt Ridge as my daughter had yet to ski Backwoods. The run out from Ruby Run and then from Twister's Little Sister down to the base of the Burnt Ridge chair was horrible. Backwoods itself was fine, except again the flat areas which were extra challenging with the sort of rotten layer on the top of the snow because of the heavy rain. We decided to forego Sagamore and took Echo back down to the base for a quick lunch to save our time for higher terrain. After lunch, it was back up the gondola, down Pine Knot to Straight Brook. We took a run down Hawkeye, which was the best snow we'd found yet since it had a little traffic. Next we took nice runs over to the High Peaks area to hit Hullabaloo and Lower Darby. Open Pit back to Straight Brook for a run down Rumor (which was my first there of the year and it was skiing nicely). Our time was starting to run short by then, so we continued down Tannery, up the Topridge chair, and down Foxlair and Wild Air to finish our day in a puddle on slush at the base. I wouldn't have minded a run down Lies and/or Chatiemac, and we probably should have skipped the trek over to Burnt Ridge to save time for those. It was a far cry from the great day I had last week at Gore but still worth the trip, and I'm glad we decided to go.
