Garden Harvest

Been picking a gallon or 2 of blueberries each time out picking lately.
Looks to be another great year for them and the picking is easy yoga.
Yellow squash are coming on strong along with cucumbers.
No red tomatoes yet.

Do you cover your bushes so you can get there before the birds? If so, would you post a pic of your setup?

Nope. Hounds get after the birds.
The 1 &3/4 year old beagle eats blueberries if ya hand feed him them.
Doesn’t have thumbs to pick his own and doesn’t bother eating the bottom ones.
He may get after some ripe drop grounders.

There’s ~8 bushes, ~30 years old, planted for a Mother’s Day back then.
Another patch on the other side of the backyard ~dozen bushes planted ~10 years ago.
I put a little Miracle grow Miracid on a few times a year to help them grow/pH.
Hounds also help with nourishments year round...

My grandparents used to cover their blueberry bushes with a plastic grid net, maybe 1/8-1/4" holes simply draped over the entirety of the row of bushes from the ground on one side to the other. The birds could still get some berry's but it did help the yield, the net also would claim the occasional victim that would get caught up in it. I forage for my berries these days, it's a short picking window but I make a point to hit my secret spots as frequently as possible when the getting is good.

I’ve got 22 bushes in a row, I regret not spacing them further apart. They’re 3’ apart . I used to put a plastic net on the row and lift one side pick and then the other side but they’re 6’-8’ high now. I gave up on covering them thanks to my neighbor who has 140’ bushes, the birds are fat .
I have no idea what he does with that many.

I barter with my friends for other goodie’s. Gooseberries and shrooms .

Been pickin gallons of blueberries each week and there’s plenty of green ones.
It’s been a great year for the blues.
The pickin seems better than yoga though I’ve yet to try yoga.
Back at it.
It’s been another great year for blueberries.
Been picking gallons.

Summer squash is plentiful and tomatoes are coming along nicely but aren’t ripe yet.
Been giving away some of the peppers to boot.

Been using the kiddy pool as a reservoir to hand water the veggies.
It’s getting dry in CNY. So far in July we’ve had <1.5 inches of rain.

Got a couple of these growing, I do these for clients kids, I tell them I have seeds that grow pumpkins/gourds with random kids names precarved in them, maybe bring one for the good people at Plattekill Harv? Side note, curved letter are tough, the o looks rough, I carve letters with razor when they are the size of your thumb, not easy to do because you can’t see where you sliced very easily until the grow more, I told a client who’s kids names have a lot of curved letters “too bad you don’t have someone named Al ! she said that’s grandpa’s name,
Just coming across this thread now (I see it started back in ‘21)…

I love this post, my nonno used to do this with pumpkins and I have since continued it with my kids…here’s ours from this past fall:

Our garden is doing well this year and we’re also working on developing a second “berry only” garden with blueberries, strawberries, a couple random wild raspberry and blackberry plants I transplanted from our local park, that I plan to mulch/acidify the soil with all the pine needles we have on one side of our property that I can’t stand (gutter clogging). My kids love the garden and are learning a lot about it, I hope to pass the knowledge and tradition along to them that my grandparents passed to me.

The non-wild blueberry was developed in NJ not far from where we live so I’ve gotten really into the idea of having a solid amount of blueberries established…garden state!
