Big Tupper Thread

And the ACR cluster continues along. So the rich guy ends up with the majority of the land but not what the so called developers labeled "the centerpiece of the project", the ski area.
Assuming of course that once the property goes to the official tax sale at the county courthouse, no one out bids the rich guy foreclosing on the mortgage at just over $5M.
OK everyone, this could be your last best chance to buy a ski area cheap. https://www.adirondackdailyenterpri...05/county-pushes-to-expedite-big-tupper-case/

Tupper Lake community priced out of bidding

By James M. Odato

This fall, Franklin County authorities intend to sell the landmark mountain best known as the Big Tupper downhill skiing center.

The 240 acres that include the mountain, a marina, a pond and a key right-of-way along Tupper Lake are set to be offered in a public auction, probably in November, said Frances Perry, county treasurer.

With plans to sell to the highest bidder, the county is no longer planning to give the town or village of Tupper Lake first crack at getting the property. The local governments have wanted to acquire the mountain by covering unpaid taxes, almost $300,000.

The four parcels up for auction were once part of the proposed Adirondack Club and Resort, the biggest real estate development ever proposed in the Adirondacks.

Big Tupper could be a large sale

The option to allow the municipalities to gain the site of Big Tupper on Mount Morris at a discount is no longer in play because of a U.S. Supreme Court decision concerning the forfeiture of property.

The ruling held that after recovering taxes owed and related costs a county must provide excess funds to the original deed holder. In this case, the original deed was held by the developers who failed to pull off the biggest project ever permitted in the Adirondacks.

Maybe somebody could buy it, build luxury "camp" homes, and promise to open the ski hill again after the snowmaking infrastructure is sold.

There is no way the town/village of Tupper Lake should be involved from any ownership position.

People need to remember that trying to reopen Big Tupper is going to cost millions. Whoever attempts this lost cause should not have to deal whatever nonsense Tupper Lake would have added while having zero money to get the ball rolling.

Realistically, it does not matter. Nobody is every going to flush the money needed to open Big Tupper. It is not possible to make money from Big Tupper.

As had been heard around for years,"The town never should have sold the Mountain" Totally agree, it was never a money maker but it wasn't costing the taxpayers much either, it made a little profit some years and lost a little other years but it kept the community plugging along in the Winter. The Town should have kept it going like Old Forge with McCauley.
AS x says, it would take Millions to get the place operational again. If the so called "developers" hadn't canabilized and sold off the snowmaking system, gutted and tore down part of the main lodge and maintained the 2 chairlifts that were usable the costs would have been a bit lower, but still a big job.
So if you get lucky and win the one of the lotteries before the sale and have a real passion, you can own the place and bring it back!

McCauley has made it because the TOW has been funneling snowmobile trail permit $ into that hill. It's been quite the controversy within the snowmobile community. I refuse, as do many other riders, to ride there due to them selling permits to ride their trails. They are the only area in NYS to do this.

Maybe if Big Tupper could get some discarded bones from ORDA’s throw aways (Lifts, Yurt, snow guns, Pisten Bullies, snowmobiles etc.) it could help minimize costs & be good for the area.

Perhaps @snoloco can weigh in on whether it's practical to move old lifts from one ski area to another. Do alpine hills run this stuff till it's dead?
