Belleayre Conditions

Anyone hit up belle today. Considering heading up for my last day tommorow. However looks like no grooming overnight because of high temps and I hate lugging through the slush to Gondi or super chief. Thoughts?
Above Overlook is fairly lovely. They fucked me and my skis by not having Tomahawk open and forcing rocky, muddy, gondy laps. But the upper mt was corn, or at worst snocone all day.

Overall, I thought today Thursday 4/13/23 was really good. Great weather, small crowd, and relatively fast snow although keep in mind that I properly prepped my board with the appropriate temperature wax.

Positive:
parking right at the Overlook Lodge
$25 lift ticket for showing my Windham pass ($5 RFID card fee waived)
lift 8 running
snowcats did some grooming
no lift lines at all
decent amount of fast and firm snow
even the softest snow was fast enough
standout trails: Algonquin, Seneca, Onteora, Wanatuska, Mohawk, and a some others I don't remember the names of

Less Positive:
all lifts delayed while snowcats finished grooming, leaving the first people to head down from Overlook stranded down at the bottom of the Belleayre Express
difficult to link open sections / lifts due to lack of snow on obvious connections; some walking was necessary
lift entrances and offloading ramps needed more attention from the lift attendants; no reason why there wasn't full snow coverage on these
some otherwise good trails suffered from major bare spots that seemingly could have been addressed; Dot Nebel for example was completely bisected by a huge dirt gap halfway down
Mohican had great coverage down to the gondola (way better than Lower Deer Run), but again the traverse over to it below Overlook was terrible...I guess some of this is the result of Belleayre's "interesting" layout, but they could have pushed some snow around to avoid this
some soft serve ice cream, slush, and puddles but I never really lost much speed going through these sections

Negative:
the lower run-out to the Belleayre express was terrible right from the start; this was especially annoying because there was a large pile of snow just past the lift that easily could have been pushed over to cover the mud and rocks
sections of Howe's Highway were completely unskiable patches of mud and rocks; sections of The Crossing were better but just barely
Lower Deer Run was pretty bad right after the bridge

All in all, a very good day with plenty of soft snow, steeps, and fast riding available. No real rock damage, but my base definitely took a beating. Somehow my edges came through fine. Make sure you prep your gear with the right wax.

Looks like today is the last day for Lift 7 as they are doing a rope evac.

Lift 6 also closed, not enough snow to get to it.

Looks like it will be Lift 8 and the box for tomorrow.

The latest on the new lift 7 is it will be a fixed grip with a mid station and loading fairly far down below the top of the lightning chair. This will be a terribly slow ride to the top when combined with the Lightning chair.

Going fast

Wow I see zero advantage to making folks circle around Overlook lodge at the end of each run, and then make the lift ride longer (and the project more expensive). Do the folks who plan these things out ever actually ski the place?

A better project for Belleayre: remove the Overlook lodge and road to it so all runs can go top to bottom and install a high-speed lift from Discovery to top of Belleayre run.

That would make the place a lot more awesomer.

Sure, if money were no object… er… never mind. That’s actually a good idea. Maybe they could do that and then build a nice lodge at the top of the Gondi

This would be cool if there were a bridge over the parking lot. But I can't see a lot of people skiing all the way around the lodge to get there.
