Winter Weather 22/23

There is no reason why every ski resort can't install Wind Turbines on the mountain, solar panels on the roofs of the lodges, just a start, skiers need to know where their politicians and representatives stand on getting a handle on slowing fossil fuels and vote accordingly. Everyone here loves the sport so fight for it, and yes I know our parochial interest pale in light of other problems that may come from climate change, but so what, young people in the sixties and seventies stopped a war, brought civil rights and woman's rights to the forefront and accomplished real changes however imperfect, no reason why you guys can't right now.

Didn’t ya see the dang sign?
Sheesh

We’re not allowed to talk about politics here, but it is funny how many of the same people who were against civil rights in the 60s are now against doing anything to stop climate change right now.

I would think “conservatives” would want to conserve the environment, but it seems like they really want to conserve what they are used to, whether it be the fuel sources that they grew up with, or the racial hierarchy that helped them succeed.

Anyway, I kinda hope that Elon Musk is successful in his dumb political turn and that a bunch of people buy Teslas to “own the libs” (or whatever it is that motivates those people).

The thing that is gonna make the market shift is when people start buying these things. And for that, the price has to come down. I can’t afford a Rivian, but good for the guys on this forum who think $70k is a reasonable amount to spend on a vehicle.

EDIT: Sorry, $79,500

Not everyone is doing nothing. Ski areas are catching on and I think sustainability is a high priority for many. Jiminy Peak and Berkshire East are two leaders in this field.
Mountaintops are great places for wind but some are ecologically sensitive with rare habitats. The Taconic crest was ruined for the wind farm between Jiminy and Brodie.

A few weeks ago I rode an ebike 182 miles to ski a half day at Belleayre with Harvey. This week, I hopped in a car with three other friends to ski a full day. The car was a lot easier. People will do what’s easiest and most comfortable for themselves and their families.

EV's or even a fully renewable power grid isn't going to do anything to reverse a changing climate, which is in part in my opinion why people just throw up their hands about doing anything at all. Climate change is largely out of our hands as a naturally occurring phenomena, we can lessen the human impacts on it, but thats where the ugliness, name calling and politics get into the equation. We aren't really good at collaborating on solutions for large scale problems as a species with population of nearly 8 billion.

Skiing and riding will continue to be suboptimal as the general trend towards warming continues end of story. How we adapt to it is what we can control. Embrace the shitty weather, mark a day out on snow as better than a day at home, and savor every opportunity to get out when it does actually snow. Beyond that, if you feel like making changes in your personal life like composting, driving an EV, installing solar on your home and reducing your time on airplanes go ahead, just don't act holier than your friends and neighbors that don't do the same.

well there is one silver lining, warm air holds more moisture. Precip and moisture levels are on the rise in all storms so the mega dumps with thaws in between seem like a good bet to continue. Thinking of that 2 footer in December, in fact every December for the past 4 or so years has had one similar.

The reason why they don't do it is that their primary goal is to make money. To do that, the first question they must ask is, "what business am I in?" and focus/execute accordingly. IMO, they are in the hospitality business, not the power generation business.
When deciding your vote, you should ask yourself, "how much am I willing to sacrifice to try to address climate change?" If I'm right, I think the number is between 30 and 40% of your current lifestyle.
That said, it drives me nuts when people idle cars excessively, walk when they should drive, retailers leave their doors open in hot or cold weather......

Just as a note: yes, climate change is naturally occurring, but we are *supposed to* be going into a cooling cycle right now (based on milankovich cycles, ocean currents resulting from continental position, etc.). The reason that we are warming is because human activity is pumping shit tons of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. 27% of those gasses come from transportation (https://www.epa.gov/transportation-air-pollution-and-climate-change/carbon-pollution-transportation)
