80s had multiple winters of little snow, memories are a funny thing

Agree Some yrs did but here along the border very near the Northern snow belt region it was fairly consistent with LES , location , location , location.

Admittedly not to the depths that were experienced in previous decades but still consistently skiable

I remember the big blizzards in the mid to late 70s but I also remember zero snow and forty degrees on Christmas (in 78 or 79 I think?)
Winters of 77/78 and 78/79
Incredible
Early 70’s eh
The 60’s were very snowy

Maybe it was 79/80? I clearly remember standing in my front yard in Goshen with no snow and thinking “what the hell? 40 degrees and no snow on Christmas?” We moved in ‘the summer of 81 so it was before then.

This winter was pretty bad, until this storm.....only takes a few or one:

Our memories are horrible at remembering historical details about the weather. The further back in time we go we will lump big snow storms and snow activities together making us think it was always snowy in the winter.

I can tell you I enjoy looking at historical weather data and putting it in spreadsheets (yes I'm a little weird). Anyone can get it and download from https://www.weather.gov/wrh/climate for their region.

While it's true we've had many low snow, warmer winters, I've found that in ROC our average low and average high for Dec, Jan and Feb is close to 3 degrees warmer over the last 60 years. Also the number of 50 degree or warmer days in Dec, Jan, Feb have increased significantly over the last 50 years, especially in the 2010's. 50 degree days aren't unusual in winter in Rochester, but what is unusual is the trend with consecutive winters with a growing number of 50 degree days.

I used to think that ski resorts could hold on by blowing at night when it's cold, even if day time temps are above freezing, but sadly that's not looking like the case.

Anecdotally this winter we've seen days long stretches of constant mid to high 30s temps where mountains just can't blow.

As an aside any predictions on whiteface for Saturday Sunday? Seeing different things from different forecasts

Bud break is happening earlier every year too. Managing the vineyards and orchards is a real challenge. Recently, I’ve had a sap run and made sugar in January.
