Windham Conditions

They must be replacing the D lift? That thing is only half the length of the old Sunway chair, and they can't extend it without running out of green circle pitch. They must be doing it just to impove loading. I'm surprised they didn't go to a carpet loader.

Yes, it is to increase capacity and alleviate base area congestion. Originally it sounded like the lift base station was actually going to be moved over but it seems to be roughly in the same spot.

"In addition, the mountain acquired 450 acres of land to enable future development and expansion of the mountain."

I heard rumours about this last season. This is probably the most significant improvement since East Peak was first opened. The motel is two properties down from us on Rt. 23 and another welcome development.

Any of that land have continuously steep terrain?

I’m pretty sure the purchase was the land skier’s left of Wicked and above Wedgie. It’s continuously downhill but I’m not sure how steep. I’ve heard rumors that emarald ash borers are gonna kill all the trees there, but I can’t confirm that.

Windham is a finalist in the 2023 I AM A SNOWMAKING contest. So is Belleayre and Jay. Voting ends Jan. 23.

Well I was at Windham for the first time Sat/Sun. Saturday was pretty icy and pretty busy. Awesome blue sky. According to people I talked to on the lift, it was the busiest they have seen it all season and the first they ran the Baker double which was fortuitous. The lift line for the sixer was massive so we didnt ride it until the end of the day when it cleared out. The three other detaches had maybe 5-10 minute lines or less which was not so bad, with the two quads at the base clearing up by noon. The Baker double did not really have a wait but but was running full. We spent a lot of the day on that lift - it gets you to the top pretty quick and the view of Wheelchair close below is very entertaining. There were a comical amount of people skiing it due to somewhat limited terrain off the west side and the condition was tricky with alternating bulletproof ice, moguls, and cookies on one side and crud on the other - lots of slow motion wipeouts (in the same spots...) but nothing too serious so you just had to laugh. I myself got caught in the crud and did a somersault. The blue/blacks were sort of wild with so many people trying to ski them, and they both are narrow cuts which became very icy. Blacks were icy particularly Wedel which had just opened up and was almost treacherous slick. Blues and greens had a decent surface. The wall had some big moguls. Warm up closed for races in the morning. Woods were not quite skiable except some of the bike tracks at the bottom kids were skiing on. We stashed our lunchbox in the cubby by the cafeteria but couldnt find a seat down there so we took it up the Whiteway to the Wheelhouse lodge which was deserted in comparison. The deck there was a nice spot for a nice day.

Sunday had much better conditions with everything regroomed. Much more edgeable and even soft in spots. A few areas evidently had pretty thin cover and were getting muddy at the end of the day, particularly the base of the east peak. Not as crowded as Saturday and cleared out by noon. Baker ran again and Wheelchair was skied in a bit and a lot of fun if you avoided the ice spots. Wedel/Warm up was closed all day for racing. Whirlwind opened up in thin cover and was a fun run.

Definitely an upscale place. Lots of racers and lots of kids. Shout out to the guys pairing up skiers on the sixer who did an excellent job running that lift to capacity and entertaining the crowd. People were very willing to pair up on all the lifts to keep things moving which was very refreshing after the past 2 years. Is this sixer narrower than some? It seemed sort of tricky getting on and off compared to others I have ridden.

Parking in the "C" lot below the lodge by the main road was a good move because everyone rolling in can ride the carpet tunnel up to the lodge (Pretty funny to watch), then you can ski down all the bunny hills right back to your car, plus we avoided most of the traffic from the upper lots.

That checks off 4/4 Catskill hills for me. As a side note I was surprised to find Belleayre and Plattekill were not on the radar of pretty much everyone here. I was also surprised to see quite a bit of uphill traffic here.

Went to Windham today to avoid lift closures further north. It was -10 at the base to start but warmed up to be much more tolerable later. Wind was also rather light which was helpful. I definitely made the right choice to come rather than deal with the much colder weather further north. I used to go to Windham all the time when I was younger, and it was really my first step up from Mount Peter and Hidden Valley. It was good to be back.

Conditions were pretty much the same on all the groomed trails. Hard packed but carveable snow. I thought it was quite good, and much better than the last time I was here.

With recent upgrades, Windham operates almost exclusively detachable lifts. However, their operations are less than stellar. The Westside Six lift has been stopping constantly all day, sometimes for minutes at a time. I'm not sure if it's the cold weather or not, but I don't remember it being like this on previous trips.

It was still better than East Peak, which didn't open till around 1 and then broke down almost immediately after it opened. Needless to say I haven't been on it, and seems unlikely that I will. Ever since the Westside Six replaced the old quad, they seem to have left East Peak for dead. Every time I have been here, the lift is constantly breaking down, opens hours late or not at all, and if it does open then it runs at half speed. Very disappointing. I like the terrain up there, but it seems like you need to really luck out in order to ski it.

I called it a day around 3. East Peak never reopened and it got much more crowded once the temperature warmed up. Now 16 degrees.

The sixer stopped a few times last weekend, once when we were just about to load for about 10 minutes. They had a whole crew in the control shack trying to get it going. East peak was running the whole time and I did not see it stop although it didnt seem to be running very fast for a detach on a very busy day.
