Whiteface Conditions

It is misleading and frustrating that Whiteface continues to list the Freeway lift as open when it is closed for a private event. It’s a straight up lie that it’s open when looking at the snow report. A separate note saying that it’s closed to the public and only open for racers is not good enough. It’s a straight up lie listing that as open when it’s closed to paying customers.

You may find the below article amusing as well as educational.
Incidentally, as a regular Gore skier, they do the same thing when it closes Echo for racing. One has to dig a bit to realize that although it shows as open, it is not.

I would have to think - based on the weather changes - a reservoir has to be built, at some point, to sustain snow making. Snow making is the only thing that is keeping these resorts alive. This season was a prime example of that.
The reservoir for WF been listed as “conceptual” since the 2004 UMP.
Engineering plans for a res predate this to at least 2002...

It’s just a draft.
Why is draft beer often better?

They should replace the check mark with a red R* IMO.
The * should say something at the bottom about racing and the hours of racing.
ORDA typically uses an orange race flag indicating trails being used for racing. Wouldn’t take much to let folks know via their website to put one next to the lift name if all trails off it were closed for racing.
They are thinking about it from on OPS perspective, not a customer perspective.
Hopefully Mtn Ops folks have communications with their supervisors & not get there info from a public facing website.
Does racing go bell to bell or do they open it to the public in the afternoon?
Some of it goes to Saturday. One of the runs was cancelled the other day cause of conditions.

It is misleading and frustrating. Ditto that for racing trails, shows open but not for the general public, only racers but lists those trails as open for trail count.

At my home hill, when you call the snow-phone, they will tell you if there's a race or not that day. We just know if there's a race that the trail is closed. Honestly, I'm fine with it. Racing plays a major part in skiing history. And, I'd say moreso at WF than most other hills.

Regarding Whiteface - getting off at mid Little Whiteface lift puts you at the same spot that the Freeway lift ends - so they service the same area. Usually in the snow report, they have an icon related to if the trail is closed for an event or not.

The Freeway lift is sometimes closed to the public but then opens up later in the day.

I am used to the Freeway lift and certain trails being "race only" - to me its just a "matter of course", since I ski here all the time. Between NYSEF and college races - there are a lot of races and these trails\lifts are usually blocked off.
But I do see the counter argument.

Yup.
Skied safely along side em often when they were practice racing at Lab and Song over the years. The kids rip & are nice.
I do wonder why they sit on their poles riding the lift though.
