Stuart talks to Alterra CEO (IKON)

IMO the jury is out on the whole "saving the industry" thing.

Everyone focuses on skiers visits. Be cool to see a statistic of the numbers of new to the sport skiers by season.
I just cannot see how mega passes encourage new skiers/riders. Just the opposite.

The big growth years for skiing were the 1960s and 70s, when young adults took up the sport. I bet now beginners are almost all the children of skiers. Maybe mega passes help those families. OTOH I'm too pessimistic to think that will save the industry.

mm

Is the Indy Pass a "mega pass"? Or only Epic and Ikon?

What about the Mountain Collective Pass? Although that's a niche product so probably doesn't really have that much impact to the overall ski industry.

Meanwhile, the family that owns Jackson Hole has found a way to sell to locals in order to keep JHMR independent. Stuart is on vacation but decided the news was too important to wait until he gets home.
Jackson Hole is on the Ikon pass

Jackson Hole is on the Ikon pass
Ikon Partners includes resorts owned by Boyne and Powdr, along with independents like JHMR and Alta. JHMR was one of the first to leave Ikon Base. My guess is that most people who plan to head to Jackson get Full Ikon instead of Ikon Base Plus.

JHMR is also on the MCP. JHMR was a founding resort for the MCP.

Need to make reservations at JHMR for both Ikon and the MCP.

There's two classes of ski hills on the iKon. Hills owned outright by Alterra, and "participation partners". I made up the second term, but, would sound good in the board room, right? Nudge nudge. Seriously, Jackson, Big Sky, Killington, Taos, Ski Dolomiti and others just form a marketing partnership, otherwise I doubt there is much management talking to each other. That's our distinguished CEOs job to ramble on about. Look at all this skiing!

Steamboat is getting quite the infusion of cash right now. If they open up that new area that is supposedly steep and hard, along with the lift improvements, it might be a place worth visiting again when it snows.

I use mega pass as shorthand for those products that undermine the long term viability of skiing. That might even include Cooper.

Who's the Vail guy with the teeth. Does he give a shit if there is skiing in 20 years?

I love the independent mountains. And that's where the risk presents itself. Mount Snow isn't in danger in the same way.

Friends of mine still in the Jackson area say that the Village is starting to feel like a private resort now. They are definitely squeezing out the ski bums there.

Load them on a wagon and send them to SLC where they belong!

Reminds of me of a college class assignment to address homelessness in Philadelphia, a wise ass (and good friend) in the class based his paper on the concept that a train ticket would be issued to anyone that picked up a bag of trash. Professors were not amused...

Maybe not so far fetched.. years later when working in Easton PA I asked why there seemed to be alot of street folks obviously suffering from mental health issues and was told that rumor has it that shopkeeper etc in NYC would want them off their block and would by them a bus ticket - Easton was the last stop.
