After the first hour or so, a bluebird day at Stratton. I was meeting my parents who were coming from further south. I skied with my dad all day. My mom did not ski due to the high cost of a lift ticket not being worth it for the icy conditions I predicted.
My mom made use of the sizeable Nordic center at the Sun Bowl Base. XC skiing today, though she can also snowshoe. It's nice having both Alpine and Nordic at the same location. The only other place that I've been that has both at the same base is Gore, and the Alpine portion of the ski bowl is seldom open.
The bad part? The icy conditions and crowds. Once again, Stratton seems incapable of recovering from a refreeze event. Their grooming is lackluster, and they didn't resurface any trails with snowmaking. Also, Upper Kidderbrook, Free Fall, Bear Down, Supertrail, and Lift Line have not seen any snowmaking this season, which made the open runs a lot more crowded. Black Bear and Lower Middlebrook were particularly bad in this regard. Killington, Okemo, and Mount Snow made snow on all their snowmaking trails this year, so I'm not sure why Stratton omitted so many major trails. I can't recall any previous year when Supertrail was skipped, and Supertrail and Upper Kidderbrook are my favorite trails there.
The lift lines were as expected, long at times, but Stratton generally does a good job filling chairs to keep things moving.
I want to like Stratton for the terrain, scenery, lifts, and the fact that there is quite a lot for non-skiing guests to do, but I find myself consistently disappointed with the snow conditions and signature runs being closed.
