Spring Weather 2023

Regarding LCC, I find it crazy that LCC doesn’t have any snow sheds like you find in Roger’s Pass or the Alps.
Snow sheds have been brought up in the past. But getting anything changed along Hwy 210 and Hwy 190 has never been easy. Perhaps because the percentage of people in SLC who really understand the situation and why it makes a difference to people who don't value what happens in LCC/BCC. In contrast to small towns like Aspen, Jackson Hole, and Taos where the local community seems to want to actively work with the resorts, hard to get that feeling from a big metropolitan area like SLC has become in the last few decades.

The warm daytime temps in the high 30s and even high 40s in LCC for the next 5 days will make it very difficult to allow SR210 in LCC to be open much. Wet slides are always a concern in April, but with all the added snow it's a much bigger deal. The approach that started a couple days ago is to allow downhill and uphill traffic for 2-3 hours first thing in the morning. Then downhill traffic for 2-3 hours in the evening before 10pm. For example, SR210 was open for downhill traffic only from 5-7am and "public" traffic from 7-9am. Then the road closed until 7pm. SR210 is expected to be open 6-9am on Sunday morning, April 9. Hopefully I'll be posting from Alta Lodge tomorrow.

SR190 in BCC will be closed midday 11am-pm April 9-13. By April 14, the daytime high is supposed to be in the 20s.

Made it to Alta Lodge this morning. Warm spring skiing with all lifts open most of the day. Hearing that tomorrow it will probably only be Sunnyside and Sugarloaf because there is high risk for wet slides everywhere else. Temps are supposed to go into the high 40s pretty quickly. Road might be open 7am-9am but maybe not. After that SR210 may be closed until Friday, April 14 when the warm front will be gone.

Be careful out there.
Stay safe. have fun.

Will do.

What we've heard is that only the Sunnyside and Sugarloaf lifts will be open at Alta tomorrow. Ski patrol doesn't want to run any risks of wet slides off the other lifts. Sunnyside is mostly the beginner terrain at the Albion base. All the gates off Sugarloaf will be closed, as they were today when all the lifts were open.

The daytime high hit 60 at Alta today. Alta closed early at 3:30. Snowbird hours are 9:00am to 2:00pm this week. Slopes were extremely empty since the road closed at 10pm last night and probably won't re-open until April 14 at the earliest. Way too warm the next few nights and days.

Snow was fun until about 2:00. After that no matter what groomer, there would be a section that included sticky snow mixed with hard snow in a tree shadow. Very few people were skiing after 2:30. I took a last run down a green off Sunnyside just to test the snow. Was also experimenting with wide skis on super soft spring snow. Usually use them for powder but they are treated with Phantom Glide because I ski late season at Alta. Liked them better than my all-mountain skis that are 85 underfoot.
