Skiing's Future

Lifts? We don’t need no stinkin lifts!
My point. People who ski are major contributors to global warming. It has lessened my desire to ski at resorts. People act kind they are getting into great clean mountains.. The trails look like garbage during the summer. I still ski but my mpact does weight on my mind.

I‘ve been thinking a lot about this recently. Been to Europe a few times to ski but that was years ago. I am very conscious about jet travel and try to limit it to once every two years or so. Looked into going to Norway by boat but it was wildly expensive. Also, can‘t be away for that long just yet. Hopefully someday. Most of my trips out west have been by car. One of them was on waste vegetable oil there and back. Sticking around here these days. Hoping to put some mileage on the skins. Planning on taking Amtrak to the ADKs at least once and have a couple bike to ski missions in mind. Probably won’t do much for the planet but I know I can do better. I’m interested in having different ski experiences besides getting in the car to go do lift laps. Been there done that and sure it’s fun but it comes at a cost and, to be honest, gets boring after awhile.

I have a middle aged rabid liberal friend who goes to rallies and shouts in people faces and goes to tons of protests I honestly don't know why she likes me because we're as far apart politically as possible but I've always had calm conversations with her as I believe in rational discourse . Several years ago she made the most hilarious comment . " Fuck global warming I have hot flashes I'm getting air conditioning."

Reading this thread is like going to an AA meeting . Hi My name is " fill in the blank " I have an Adrenalin addiction to skiing.
I'll travel all over the planet to satisfy it ,but somehow justify it by felling guilty ? It's ok people the planet is doomed so have a great time. :D

I’m poor so be default my existence is incredibly eco-friendly and green. If I had money could I sit up on a high horse and continue to have such a small foot print? Maybe but probably not if I’m honest.

I'm sure we are all aware this thread is on the edge, could be locked anytime. I'd like to keep it open but won't hesitate. Phrases deriding left or right (aka rabid liberal etc) aren't helpful. With "liberal" or "very liberal" you can express the same general idea with out calling up images of a diseased dog.

Beyond that, Sbob's point rings true. Contradictions abound.

The original NYT article posted by RA ends with the idea that the efforts of the ski areas to be more "green" are a drop in the bucket compared to the driving and flying done by skiers to ski. I think about it all the time, and acknowledge that I am a not in alignment. I make efforts to drive efficiently and carpool, but that really isn't much at all. And last year I carpooled far less than I did the previous year, because of covid. The only time I carpooled was my May trip to Killy, after I was vaxxed.

Still it's not the first time, and won't be the last, that people have to choose between their own self interest and the interests of all. It happens all the time. When doing the right thing for all is a choice (vs a law) it's not an easy choice to make. You only live once, and we all want to enjoy life.

On a more humorous note, a retired forum member emailed me and pressured me to delete the misinformation in this thread.

Ski areas promote green energy in some ways but then are completely hypocritical in others. Take Killington for example. They use methane extracted from cow manure to help power the K1 Gondola which is great (though unclear what percentage of the power it contributes). But then they go and have a "partnership" with Subaru of New England where Subaru owners get premier parking at Ramshead. Nevermind the fact that Subaru is currently only selling 1 measly hybrid that nobody seems to be buying, and no EV development beyond what Toyota may someday give them as a hand-me-down. Meanwhile Subaru is more than happy to keep moving Ascents with a combined 23 mpg. So much for POW.
