Skiing's Future

It's not really a silly discussion, and the misconception is that climate change or whatever else will be human kinds demise will be a singular event that will turn it all off like a light switch. It's a slow, drawn out series of events that continue to impact quality of life and geopolitics. Mass migration from climate refugees fleeing regions of the world where it is no longer viable to live will spark a humanitarian crisis that will be met with locked down borders, anti immigrant sentiment and a rise of fascist authoritarian governments. The wealth gap will increasing dictate the level of comfort you will be able to sustain in your everyday life, the rich will disappear to New Zealand or Tasmania where it is geologically sound and rain continues to fall. If your over 50 none of this is going to matter to you, so just go on living I guess? I'm not arguing about how to live in the face of this, I agree there is little we can do as individuals to impact meaningful change.

The future of skiing is bleak, but it's no more bleak than the future in general.

Like anything biological, pandemic, climate change or otherwise, we are largely at the mercy of nature and unable to to drastically change natural processes once they get rollin. However humans are a bit of an exception biologically, we've gotten to 7.9 billion and have left our mark on every square in of this planet, overcoming nature is in our human nature.
Best to live with nature, not try to overcome it. It’s fun most of the time. We’re all a product of it.

"left our mark on every square in of this planet” is a bit of stretch there chief, dontcha think?

I got paywalled as well. I believe most fires are sparked by mother nature via lightning.
Given the politicization of science, especially evident during covid-19, I have no hope that the human race will address climate change in a way that results in any significant mitigation. The planet will be fine but humans will go the way of the dinosaur.
If only humans could be as successful as dinosaurs! Dinosaurs enjoyed 150+ million years on this planet. Depending on your definitions, we've been around between 150,000 to 600,000 years. Civilization as we think of it is much much younger. My own view is that we're in the early stages of mother nature's experiment with intelligence and it's not looking much like an evolutionarily beneficial trait. We've really only been able to wipe ourselves out for less than 100 years and look where we are. It may not be tomorrow or even 100 years from now, but I can't see humans still existing 10,000 years from now.....

Anyway, Mountain Run is open at Whiteface!

SARS-CoV2 spread = "slow, drawn out series of events". Check.
"locked down boarders". Check.
"Authoritarian governments". Check.
"Wealth gap"... Mom and pop's shut down, big and on-line stores open. Prices going up. Check.
Super"rich will disappear to" wherever they want. Check.

I just wanna go skiing soon on a little hill not far away.
Colder weather is comin. I’ll ski in it.

Human's civilizations didn’t get rolling till we hung out with dogs.
Neanderthals had bigger brains and were larger.
Dogs came along and the rest is history.
I often look to guidance from dogs, but don’t blame them, unless they left a mess on the floor.

I like your take. The only part I disagree with is the implied dismissal of the Neanderthals. They were absorbed by the Cro Magnans as they evolved into modern humans. I supposedly have a very high percentage of Neanderthal DNA, according to my sister’s 23 & Me results. I like the dog angle though. Add horses and I’m really on board.
