Skiing's Future

Not sure why, every so often the NYT let's me read an article without paying, including this time.

At the end the article says basically that the biggest impact from skiing, by far, is the driving and flying we do to get there.

Aren't most fires set off by humans?
I got paywalled as well. I believe most fires are sparked by mother nature via lightning.
Given the politicization of science, especially evident during covid-19, I have no hope that the human race will address climate change in a way that results in any significant mitigation. The planet will be fine but humans will go the way of the dinosaur.

If humans think they can stop the earth's climate from constantly changing they’re deranged.
Dinosaurs most likely didn’t think that nor did any other life form that ever flourished here.
Sun gods were a thing too, allegedly.
YMMV dependin on how ya roll.

Like anything biological, pandemic, climate change or otherwise, we are largely at the mercy of nature and unable to to drastically change natural processes once they get rollin. However humans are a bit of an exception biologically, we've gotten to 7.9 billion and have left our mark on every square in of this planet, overcoming nature is in our human nature. The difference with the last mass extinction and the one we are currently living through is the unquestionable impact of C02 emissions brought fourth during the industrial revolution that continues to accelerate right up to today. We could have stopped the worst impacts of C02 but as a species don't want to curb economic progress or sacrifice our consumerist way of life, particularly here in the west. Remember that time we banned CFC's and other ozone depleting chemicals back in Montreal back in 1989 and it actually worked?

I don't think anyone is thinking we can stop the natural process but we can do things to mitigate our own human activity that causes climate change. It's a defeatists attitude to think that we can't. We won't however because of politics.

Some don't give we humans and science enough credit, imo. Remember the acid rain thing of the 80's??? I do. We humans changed things and now DEC is finding Native Brookie's in once fishless ponds. It takes a long ass time for things to change, and it isn't all the doom and gloom some want us to think it is.

It's also a defeatist attitude to say we won't because of politics ;).

True and 2 years ago I may have agreed with you. But after the last 18 months, I see science has no chance against politicians and political talk show hosts that only seek to enrich themselves and increase their power.

Acid rain is still around. They just moved it from falling on the Adirondacks to other places in the world.
