Ski Area To Change Its Name

I know it seems to fit into a cancel narrative, but as someone that stays somewhat connected to the hill, I’m here to say there was no evidence of mounting outrage from an offended group where the hill succumbed to pressure.

It’s ok for a business to look in the mirror and proactively make changes, potentially unpopular, based on who they are and what they want to represent. Whether it’s a name change, putting in a terrain park or flattening expert terrain.

If a significant number of locals and regulars aren’t bothered by the name change, it shouldn’t for others.

…All right, I’ve exceeded my two year post count in one day and dried up…”Be excellent to one another”
There doesn’t need to be people directly applying pressure. It’s a trend now and the sensitive people are making these decisions. I see it at my work all the time. It’s a generational thing.

If you don’t understand what I’m saying I’m not sure how to better articulate it for you. Maybe it’s possible that you yourself are so entrenched in that culture you don’t see it that way? I don’t know but removing the word suicide and replacing it with a Native American name is definitely what I’m talking about.

“I actually remember when I was volunteer coaching and explaining to the kids how to run suicides, just for a second, wondering if calling them that would get me in trouble so I asked the other coach if they had a different name now. He was like, "I dunno. What else would you call em?" We went with suicides. The world didn't crumble.” -brownski

When I’m working with the young 20 something yr olds I find myself constantly thinking to myself, “was that offensive or wrong in their eyes?”

I’ve literally had kids go after me with angry emails sent to the management team attacking my work or my communication that was obviously done because I may have disagreed with them or said something they didn’t like.

Meh, agree to disagree. Folks are reading into this too much and getting themselves worked up over a name change as if it’s one more step closer towards the world crumbling.

At the end of the day it’s a business, and sensitive committee or not, they felt that was best for them. Say whatever you want about me, but attitudes and norms will always change in time for better or worse, and smart businesses adapt.

I worked on and off in kitchens for 20 years and the culture, as un-PC as it was was what made the whole experience bearable imho. I'll check that out for sure.

Two words:Mario Batali

Read Heat by Bill Buford. It's not comfortable to be the young attractive female pastry chef.
But, that goes way back to the almost militaristic system of chef training in France.

Worked in the pots and pans and plates area of the dining hall in college for a bit.
There’s always room for jello.
Fact.

Back in my hoops day's I ran more suicides than I care to remember. They are appropriately named.

I worked at a resort. The chef was an asshole but he liked me, and fed me like a king, which was huge because I was making like $3.75 an hour. My GF was a waitress and to quote Jerry Seinfeld she had "qualities prized by the superficial male." He gave her tons of shit, pretty much because of the way she looked. Made her cry on a regular basis, and made her orders late so she would get crappy tips. Like a wuss I didn't really stand up for her. Not proud of that.
