Purchasing Land

Read The Overstory twice. Was really good. Also read The Hidden Life of Trees which was what some of The Overstory was based on.

Farmers are great growing up on long Island Suffolk County few decades ago my dad brought best rubar pies from farms by Mattick NY

We stumbled into the ideal situation by pure luck. We bought 5 acres in a small set of plats that were originally ten acre strips surrounded by logging company land. We worried that at some point the logging company would sell up and there would be a sea of houses, but low and behold the town now has a conservation easement with the logging company to preserve the watershed from development and the logging company allows recreational access. So we're surrounded by 3000 acres of forest. Downsides are we worry about fire all summer and the internet service options are limited. Electricity got to be so unreliable we put in a generator. We have our own well and we have to worry about a septic system. We live on a dirt road, so there's no point in washing the car unless it's staying in the garage.

They inevitably back up when you least want it. 4 am or as you walk out the door to go skiing. Ours has an alarm now, at least.

If they're working properly one should never have to touch it. But yes, if they back up you have an issue, just like with a sewer system.

I lived on a septic system for many years. Best to use single ply toilet paper (more digestable), put in Sep-tabs from time to time (or yeast), have it pumped out every 4 years (for 2 people, every 2 years for 4 people), use aerators in your taps but DON'T use anti-bacterial soap.
Less worry if you live in sandy soil. Hopefully you have 2 tanks and know where the lid is.
Also, don't put patio stones or anything impermeable over top. Treat the system well and it should last you 30+ years.
