ORDA Board Meetings

Hey... mea culpa, I've done my share of complaining about ORDA. But I thought this was a positive note. Obviously I'm pleased with the improvements at Mt van Ho... now if only they can get some of the 1980 memorabilia into the new lodge.
In the latest board meeting there was discussion of the oval with some history of the skating rink and the people. Lots of prep for World University Games in 2023 with planning to be a big deal for Lake Placid.

I'm just gonna go in a different direction for a moment. Guy comes into the winer shop where I now work wearing a Lake Placid hat. We chat, he likes to ski. His recently graduated son landed a job at ORDA, and his impression is that the sky is the limit, they encourage new ideas and ambition.
I definitely hope that continues to be the case for him.

My final point on this topic (maybe) ... Believe it or not, I'm not an ORDA basher ... I believe in ORDA's mission and purpose, and by and large, I do think they do a pretty good job. That said, just as if I was a stockholder in a corporation, as a New York State resident and taxpayer, since my tax dollars are funding ORDA, I expect excellence from them. I fully understand that we're not always going to GET excellence, but I'll never EXPECT anything less.

They do a great job for Lake Placid, not so much for North Creek and, so far, not so much for the area around Belleayre.

This resonates with me. I somehow feel more invested. The ORDA model is in a sense a version of the USFS lease model out west (and parts of NE) at least from a land ownership standpoint. As skiers we can become really attached to the landscape and terrain we ski. As cool as that experience might be at a private ski area, philosophically it just feels disconnected in some fashion to pay money to seek thrills on someone else's private property. Going to Hunter feels like going to Great Adventure in a way.
