New Member Intro

Yup, the social thing is big. We did Elk over MLK weekend with another family where they each had a friend of the same age and similar enough ability and it worked out great. Unfortunately my 12yo does not love ski school, but she also often does not want to ski all day like her parents, which can make trips when it's just us occasionally challenging...

Hello everyone. My name is John and I currently reside in the Philadelphia area. I’m originally from NY and did not have the opportunity to ski much growing up. It was only when I moved to Bozeman, Montana, in the 90s that my skiing picked up (and the opportunity to regularly ski the Ridge at Bridger Bowl significantly improved my abilities).
Welcome! Missed your intro because I was starting a trip out west that ended with three days at Bridger. I always ski a few days at Bridger when I plan a trip to Big Sky. My instructor there is Ric Blevins, who is semi-retired but still available as a Ridge Guide. He's the same age as my primary ski buddy, my schoolmate from North Country School in Lake Placid who turned 70 last year.

Have you ever considered checking out Montage? That's where my friends who live in Philadelphia get season passes.

Welcome JK_PA. I learned to ski at Spring Mountain. I try to get there once a year just to support them. Haven't been in few years but it is a great little feeder hill. If you haven't tried Bear Creek you might want to check it out. A little bigger than Spring Mountain and has a great lodge and restaurant. When i heard years ago that someone bought Doe Mountain and was going to make it into a four season resort, I thought they crazy. But it has been very successful.
Thanks for the welcome Trackbiker and sorry for the delayed response (technology and I sometimes don't get along). I had been to Bear Creek once like five years ago but it was not on my radar for my wife's current hip replacement recovery. Spring Mountain was all she could handle this year but Bear Creek is the perfect next step for next season when she is a bit stronger (and that place sure has a beautiful lodge!). I did not know the place when it was Doe Mountain but it does seem that ski hills in this area need to expand beyond skiing to remain viable. On a related note of ski hills expanding beyond skiing, Spring Mountain recently opened an outdoor ice skating rink. Haven't tried it yet but I look forward to the opportunity.

Thanks also MarzNC for the welcome. So glad to hear you made it out to Montana and Bridger Bowl. I do miss that place. I hope you had fantastic conditions!

It’s interesting that you mentioned Montage. I try to make it once or twice to Elk each year. Seeing Montage in the distance as I drive past Scranton on my way to Elk always made me curious about the place. It’s 2 hr 20 min for me to Elk and only 20 minutes shorter to Montage. I always have a great time at Elk so I keep ending up at Elk. Then I got the Indy Pass last year (which includes Montage) and that tipped the scales for me to try Montage. The place is a lot of fun. I still do my best to visit Elk but a trip or two to Montage each year is now almost a given as well.

I remember my first pair of "real" ski boots, leather lace up with a lace up liner with a pair of fiberglass red white and blue K2 knockoffs with Tyrolia step-in bindings. I felt like an Olympic skier. That was over 50 years ago when I was a kid growing up in CT. Now I'm retired and live in central NH a 10 minute drive from Ragged where you'll find me a couple times each week during the ski season and a couple times hiking up the back side in the fall.

I've been a member of the SnowJournal and AlpineZone forums since about 2008 and check in there frequently. I'll be adding my 2¢ worth here from time to time as well as posting some of my skiing inspired t-shirt designs. You can have a look at https://www.teepublic.com/user/ski-classic-nh . I hardly make any money at it but its just the only artistic outlet I have.

In the meantime I look forward to exploring the forum and ... see you out there.

Hi all! I’ve grown up in NNY all my life and in my 20s, I don’t plan to go anywhere else anytime soon. My local spot is Dry Hill, but I also frequent Snow Ridge. When the storms blow east, I make the occasional trip to the Face, Gore, McCauley, and Titus. Most of my skiing is done in resort, but when the High Peaks in the Adirondacks fill in, I like to spend my time backcountry skiing the countless landslides that exist in the area. With that said, let’s hope this El Niño serves NY good this year!
