Magic Conditions

They had a private mountain rental today so there won't be any powder on the east side.

Ski Safari - 8th and final day

Beautiful half day at Magic. While portions of the open trails did soften up, anything in the shade remained pretty firm when I left around 2. The snow depth between upper Vermont / Maine, and lower Vermont couldn't have been in more contrast to finish the trip, but they did manage to get some natural trails and glades open, albeit scratchy.

I thought I might run into someone from Platty there, but I wasn't expecting to see Laz himself . I briefly said hi and he said he was there for his son's race.

I had a pretty good day at Magic today, on my first Indy redemption. When I planned this a few days ago, the forecast looked pretty good. But I woke up to see that the overnight mixed precip was still working its way through. So I took a little longer to get started, hoping the weather would mostly move out by the time I got there. When I arrived after 10:30, it was just a little misty, nothing to stop me from wanting to go out.

The groomed and snowmaking trails were fun, damp but soft with the exception of it being a little scratchy up near the top. Off the groomers there was an icy crust over the recent pretty wet snow. The mist was on and off all day, and by mid-afternoon the top was getting pretty foggy.

My favorite run of the day was Talisman, which was either groomed or had a good amount of skier traffic. I also took a run down ungroomed Sorcerer, which was challenging to say the least. This was early afternoon, and by this time the icy crust had pretty much softened up but the snow was heavy and wet. I'm glad I did it, but I decided against trying other open trails/glades that looked to be in similar shape like Witch, Black Line, Slide of Hans, and Goniff Glade.

Despite the weather, it was a good day of skiing, just not like what I've had at Magic. I hope to get back for my second Indy redemption in the second half of the month.

At least a foot or more today. Some places were knee deep. But only 2 lifts and long lines. waited 30 minutes each time for the red lift so we only got 7 runs in. They were quality runs though and mostly in the trees. Talisman was our last and best run of the day. Good vibes but was craving more runs.

Same today,

Same today, sold out and 30 min waits, but still great conditions. Just skied Talisman, nice soft bumps. If I get 10 runs in today it will be a miracle, but it's still a Magic day.

March continues to roar--this time with a nor'easter heading our way with 1 to 2 feet or more of snow in areas

Currently it is snowing lightly at Magic but this is separate from the upcoming storm system which begins tonight. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for southern Vermont which is in effect until Wednesday morning. 18-24"+ of snow is expected! Snowfall rates could be 2-4" per hour at times on Tuesday so travel will be hazardous as snow plows will not be able to keep up. High winds will enhance the possibility of power outages in the area on Tuesday. Some high winds may linger into Wednesday.

Magic will open on Wednesday for a powder day at 9am as the system begins to pull away although snow showers will continue most of the day. The Red Summit lift only will spin on Wednesday with some minimal grooming (not a day for novice or low intermediate-level skiers...Thursday and Friday will be a better days for less advanced skiers with more grooming).

Tickets are on sale now. Brownie and Kyle are out in the groomers today prepping some trails for the heavy snow by flattening some moguls that built up on key trails. There is no overnight parking at Magic other than 5 designated spots for RVs and campers in back of Lot B which can be reserved online in our tickets store for $50. Plows will be operating in the lots on Tuesday and Wednesday morning in an attempt to keep up with the storm and heavy snow. This week's storm will just add to the mountain-wide snow which has Magic 100% open and will make for a fantastic week of skiing and riding here. Indy Pass Holders should make reservations online to insure a place here.

Discounted tickets and Indy reservations are here

Uphill Travel is closed all day Tuesday until 9am Wednesday morning (there is no accessing Magic for uphill touring on operating days without a free uphill ticket which can be reserved online and picked up at the ticket office).

The Black Line Tavern will be open Wednesday for lunch and apres ski until 6pm. Thursday through Saturday the BLT has dinner, with a special St Patrick's Day menu for Friday's dinner as well as Saints & Liars, with Mamma's Marmalade, playing from 5-9pm! This storm seems to have a lot of the luck of the Irish going for all us skiers and riders this week!
