Killington Conditions

I've listened to all of their podcasts.

The hike out of Bear was not fun. I hiked up Bearly to Great Eastern, then realized that the Skyeship Gondola was also down, so I had to hike up Carpenter's Run to get to Needle's. After that, I took the Northbrook Quad out and skied over to K1.

Anyone at K today? My brother and I were going to reinstitute our annual meet-up today (last time we tried was ‘the day the music died’ 3/15/20 and we had to switch to Magic while on the road) but decided to go tomorrow instead. Looks like the rain today might not be as much as predicted and there might even be snow tonight.

Once the rain cleared up, an excellent spring skiing day.

As for tomorrow, it's going to be hard and fast. Stick to groomers, low elevation, low angle, and south facing terrain. Tomorrow is the last day for Skyeship Base, so if you want to enjoy the long runs down to there, then get it while you can.

Since you brought up 3/15/2020 and Magic, one of my friends was intending to go to Bromley that day, but also ended up at Magic. All 3 times he has been to Magic, he did not intend to ski at Magic. First time he ended up there, he originally intended to go to Mount Snow, but switched to Magic due to wind. Second time was Bromley due to covid. Third time was Bromley due to wind.

Today was locked pretty tight - they had closed all ungroomed runs, but Skyeburst started to soften up by noon or so - same with Bear Claw. All the open blues including the runs around Snowdon6 were pretty good by 12-1pm and the weather and views were awesome. Good to be back at K for first time in a while - new lodge was beautiful - escalators!

Skyeship seemed to be having mechanical problems when we took Carpenters Run all the way down - we had to wait a while for a lift stop that we were told was mechanical. that thing may be in need of an overhaul - coming on 40 yrs old?

Was surprised South Ridge was closed - would have thought that would be terrain which would soften today..

Bear is usually the first part of the mountain to soften. It faces southeast. Off of Snowdon, Highline also faces southeast.

The April sun is so intense that it doesn't need to be more than a degree above freezing to get softening, and you can't go wrong with a bluebird day.

The new lodge is excellent. A huge improvement over the undersized embarrassment we had before. Don't listen to the haters who say it's "soulless". I do wish the escalators didn't break as much, though it seems you got lucky.

Skyeship was built in 1994, so it's coming up on 30 years old, not quite 40 yet. Their other gondola, K1, was built in 1997 and had a major overhaul in 2018 that included a new haulrope, electrical upgrades, and full carrier replacement. All of those are things old detachables often need to continue operating. The difference with Skyeship is that it has less than half as many hours as K1. It's known to not have the best reliability, though it never stranded me this year or last.

Stellar day. Only the Canyon and Superstar north facing runs didn't soften. Was plenty to ski elsewhere. After 6.5 hours of bump skiing my legs had it.

Vertigo and Northstar co ROTDs with absolutely perfect moguls. Outer Limits a close runner up. Back at it tomorrow.

Wow, what a day! Not a cloud in the sky, near perfect temps, almost the entire mountain open, and wall to wall coverage on most open terrain. They even reopened the South Ridge Quad for one last hurrah, after it didn't operate the last two weekends. Best trails in my opinion were Pipe Dream, Skyeburst, Needle's Eye, and Vertigo, but you couldn't go wrong on anything that softened up. Only the Canyon and North Ridge terrain did not soften, and that just means the snow will live to be skied another day.
