Hunter didn't open today.

There is a reason why there are bumper stickers that say: "Vail Sucks".

You're still thinking this is Covid related, huh? If it were Covid related they would have mentioned that. "Excluded from work" is lawyerspeak that means nothing.

I do, yes. DMC is a Hunter homer who doesn't sugar coat anything. If he says it was due to COVID then I believe him.

It’s possible that 2 or 3 positive tests could knock out the majority of the patrollers. The protocol is usually for everybody they’ve been in contact with to isolate- at least until they get a negative test themselves

While evidently a 2 or 3 patrollers could not come in due to Covid issues a piece of the problem is that is that when Vail took over Hunter they stopped giving volunteer patrollers passes for their family, There may also be some labor issues with the paid patrollers. Not surpassingly this led to less patrollers available when some are out. The Albany paper alluded to this issue along with an article in the NortheastSkiology facebook group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/NortheastSkiology/

Haven't been reading for a while. Here's an article from Jan. 6 that mentions both that a couple patrollers tested positive and the issues with volunteer patrollers.

"While resort revenue for the quarter was $131.5 million, down 50% from last year’s $263.6 million, its earnings from ski and lodging operations fell only 24% to $94.8 million. Katz credited the smaller drop in earnings to “disciplined and rigorous cost controls” — including cuts in wages and salaries — in recent months."

From the above article, you wonder if the CEO came up with that "excluded from work" phrase, because, this:

"In more positive news, Katz said the growth in the number of skiers who are new to Vail Resorts buying the Epic Day Pass bodes well for the future and “will accelerate our ability to move guests into advanced commitment.”"

"To move guests into advanced commitment". Yes, he said that.

... CEO.. Katz said the growth in the number of skiers new to Vail... bodes well for the future and “will accelerate our ability to move guests into advanced commitment.”"
Did Katz say they got better chances with newbies?
Is that like bringing chocolate and roses & lookin for future "advanced commitments"?
How dare they?

He and the rest of VR are hedge fund money guys not true skiers. That is what it is for them.

Look at Hunter. That place is a cash cow. If you think about it, they do and have been doing one of the most amazing jobs in the ski industry for decades. But, no sorry, we're going to change things around. McNugget the entire mountain. It's like China with Hong Kong, slowly, the monster will bring in its prey.

(I actually like Hunter (on weekdays) its VR that is the evil one).

You have to keep in mind that VR only exists for their stock price. Any decision is made based on how it will affect their stock price. They have done everything possible to extract as much revenue this season as possible to almost surgical precision. Their pass assurances are designed to give them as many out's as possible. They did not prioritize passholders in their reservation system. Now they even punish passholders who cancel reservations (not just no shows) by only allowing them to make reservations the night before (when certainly weekends and even some weekdays would be already sold out). No one else does that. They only punish repeat no shows. These are just a few legitimate reasons one might cancel a reservation or end up a no show:

Car broke down
Bad weather or conditions expected
Exposed to contracted covid
Pass not scanned
Any last minute emergency that prevents someone from being able to make it

They literally punish you for life happening.
