Hometown USA: Glens Falls, NY

Hey, a slide off topic here....but if any of you guys with Broadway connections hear of any jobs that an Emerson College grad with a degree in Business of Creative Enterprises (new program, fancy name for Marketing Communications in the entertainment world) would fit give a holler. She graduated a year ago December and the vid wiped out the job she had lined up. She been living home doing side stuff since.

Where’s home? Adk Theatre Festival needs some intern help but probably requires a little time in the Glens Falls office. But maybe not.

Sounds similar to my cousin’s daughter. She’s doing marketing for FIlene’s 54 below, contact her if ya want. She may give her some tips on how to get started putting on shows for a living.

We are in the mid Hudson valley, wappingers (close to Pok). Hey, any advice or contacts you can give her would be great, and greatly appreciated. She just applied for a part time gig at DCC doing some kind of not for profit stuff, which she’s interested in.

Ran a cross country race at wappingers falls in middle school. School was in Ossining, lived not far from where the orange man put in a new golf course. Moved back to CNY after dad did a short stint in Manhattan around when Mets won their 1st World Series. We were all glad to get back to the countryside of things. Learned a lot though when there.

I would imagine COVID has impacted the program but have you checked out the outdoor theatre at Boscobel in Garrison? I have yet to go but I have heard good things. I hope some open air performances get to happen this Summer

Not much going on there, I don’t think. My daughter has a connection there. Before she graduated she met with a guy who was a big mucky muck at Disney on Broadway. He left Disney and now runs the Shakespeare Theatre at Boscobel. Maybe that connection will prove useful, some day.

So... my family and I are very close to pulling the trigger on a move from SW Montana, arguably the best ski region in North America after interior BC, though that too is within road tripping distance, to Glens Falls, NY and just wanted to get peoples' insight. Trading alpenglow on the Bridgers for the billowing smoke of Finch Paper might not be the easiest pill to swallow but there are practical reasons (family, friends, affordability, job opportunities, etc.) that seem to make sense at this point in our lives. I identify as a skier and proudly as a NY skier (rep'ing the St. Platty's Day shirt right now) and have enjoyed reading this blog for over decade so I kinda know what I am getting into, but not really. To be honest, Glens Falls became a target more from looking at maps than anything else, a remote spatial analysis exercise so to speak and Covid hasn't made on the ground recon any easier. GF meets the following important criteria:
  • Close to family in the Hudson Valley ✔️
  • Decent schools / close to daycare ✔️
  • Close to significant open space (Adirondack Park) ✔️
  • Ski area with night skiing that I can potentially see from my house ✔️
  • Centrally located to bigger ski areas / BC zones in NY and VT ✔️
  • Youth hockey programs ✔️
  • MTB trails close by ✔️
  • Other summer stuff - lakes/ rivers ✔️
  • Relatively affordable ✔️
On paper things look good and we are excited about the transition. We want to become part of the community and raise our sons there. Will we miss the West at times? Absolutely. Will the trade offs be worth it? Hopefully. The reality is we don't know anyone in Glens Falls and what it is really like living there on a daily basis. What do you all think...?
Glens Falls is great, 40 mins to gore. There is 40-50 miles of mountain bike trails all interconnected in queensbury, you can ride your bike to lake George village all on a paved beautiful bike path, you’re close to LG day hikes, lake Luzerne day hikes, Saratoga etc...and for those saying the dining scene isn’t good here, just plain haven’t been to downtown GF In a while.

this winter I have been going to coles woods and xc skiing on the 5k loop of lighted and groomed trails after work. Normal years my family and I always catch the Adirondack thunder minor league hockey games on Friday/Saturday nights, there is also lots of adult hockey pickup games during the week, as well as a great youth program for the kids.

yes the winters aren’t the best here...you know that...but if I’m going to live in the northeast, GF is one of the best places to do it. Prices aren’t insane like Saratoga and it’s not overcrowded in the summers either. The community is the best part about it...

And you can’t beat those post work powder nights at west.

I grew up between Glens Falls and Saratoga, have had a summer business in the east Adirondack foothills near Lake Champlain since 1976. Mostly a backcountry skier, been spending winters in Bozeman for the last ten years, muchly to escape chancy and sometimes impossible BC conditions in the Dacks. Trees are farther apart here too. Glens Falls should suit you if you don't mind shorter winter, rain any time, skiing on manufactured snow, longer commute. Lots of other still developing recreational amenities nearby, non-crazy house prices too.
