Hickory Ski Center Might Be Reopening

I think the real news is that there are professional zip liners and disc golfers.

The patent for a disc golf "hole" dates from 1975.

Looks like there are around 250 disc golf courses in New York. Actually originated in the USA in NY.

" . . .
Jim Palmeri, his brother, and a small group of people from Rochester, NY, had been playing disc golf as a competitive sport on a regular basis since August of 1970, including tournaments and weekly league play. By 1973, they had even promoted two City of Rochester Disc Frisbee Championship events which featured disc golf as the main event.

Magic has had disc golf soon after re-opening. Presumably it brings in revenue. Not only for using the course, but also for the bar afterwards.

"Our majestic 18-hole course is open June 1 through October 31.

Magic Mountain National Disc Golf Course is open everyday from June 1 thru October 31. Magic has the challenging topography perfect for New England-style disc golf courses. Come out to the mountain this summer and enjoy our full 18-holes championship course through crisscrossing open trails and wooded glades, with about everything nature has to offer in between.

Rochester is a golf town.
The PGA championship will be at Oak Hill in mid-May.

“Steady” Ed Hands Ted Smethers a Bottle of Genesee Cream Ale

It was at the next Disc Golf World Championships in 1984 at Rochester, New York (site of the seminal AFDO a decade earlier) that Ed handed over control of the PDGA to a group of players led by Ted Smethers #1159. At the players meeting, Ed ceremoniously handed Ted a glistening green bottle of Genesee Cream Ale as if bestowing the keys to his disc golf kingdom. This was a key moment in PDGA and disc golf history alike; the players would now begin to assume the leadership roles in the organization."

No way to fuck up the natural environment better than 18 holes of disc golf! Sure getting wasted outdoors with your buddies can be fun but I can think of about 10 different activities one could accomplish this without trampling native ground cover, scaring trees and turning an otherwise pleasant natural setting into a game of dodge duck and dive for hikers.
Wait. What? Are you a skier? Like, THAT is a great way to treat a mountain?

As someone who advocates for mountain bike trails it is frustrating the scrutiny we get put under for impacts on the natural environment. Meanwhile I've personally witnessed disc golf courses pop up on parcels we've been denied access to for "impact" only to see those same areas become eroded mud pits from drunk bros trampling through the forest trying to find their disc.

Yeah, we don’t have the best record for that either. I think new projects are generally conducted in good/safe ways (when they’re being watched at least) but a lot of (most) mountains still have broken down vehicles, lift parts and other detritus from past decades scattered around their properties, slowly rusting/leaking/poisoning the soil and water.

You’re not wrong. I mean, not entirely wrong. Bike trails need to be routed and constructed correctly but they shouldn’t be rejected just because the some local council member still views mountain bikers as impoverished, drug-addled dirtbags. If “who fucks up the environment the worst?” Was the standard then we would have to ban picnicking in Harriman State park. I hate to even think about the carpet of beer bottles, food containers and old diapers that must be on the bottom of Lake Welch. It’s disgusting.

C'mon. The complaint was about scarring trees and trampling down grass into somewhat muddy trails. Jezuz. Ski areas are created by cutting down hundreds of trees and leveling land, sometimes with explosives, to make trails.

Pictures of it didn't happen. Disc golf is fun. Its great at a big party.. Have never played at a ski resort to much walking up and down hills

Seems like if they pass NY inspection ya could be able to get a ride uphill.
The more things change...
Looks like Hickory could use some dinero$ for in$urance.
