Hickory Ski Center Might Be Reopening

This is why Mt. Greylock Ski Club is member/volunteer based and does not sell tickets or passes, only memberships along with guest priveleges. From my understanding, they could never operate if they had to purchase insurance for liability. It does however inhibit growth if there ever was an opportunity to do so.

The patent for a disc golf "hole" dates from 1975.

Looks like there are around 250 disc golf courses in New York. Actually originated in the USA in NY.

" . . .
Jim Palmeri, his brother, and a small group of people from Rochester, NY, had been playing disc golf as a competitive sport on a regular basis since August of 1970, including tournaments and weekly league play. By 1973, they had even promoted two City of Rochester Disc Frisbee Championship events which featured disc golf as the main event.
. . ."
A former co-worker is a nationally ranked disc golfer. There's a disc golf course up here at Dewey Mt; there's one at Mountain Way Park in Parsippany NJ. I haven't found them all that obtrusive. Lots of cool singletrack at Dewey, too.

Article is paywalled.

If I'm going to fund them, I'll buy a pass.

The GoFundMe description is pretty clear. If they don't have enough money by the deadline in two weeks for the insurance, Hickory won't re-open. The goal is $10K. The full text is on the Hickory website.

"On this Giving Tuesday, we've set up a GoFundMe to help Hickory Ski Center open with lift-served skiing for the 23/24 season. All contributions will go directly to this effort.

Hickory’s 2023-24 Ski Season (77 years from the inaugural season)

We are at a crossroads. We have our lift inspections scheduled, sticks are on, the lodge is ready, and the slopes are (almost) ready. What we are missing is the liability insurance required for state certification of our lifts for operation.

Historically we have raised funds to cover insurance and other operating costs through the sale of season passes. We have been hesitant to do that given the challenges we faced with lift certification. We no longer have a choice. Our timeline is short. We have until December 15th to raise sufficient funds to cover our full insurance premium payment of $38,000. Yes, it is outrageous, and we have explored all options over the last 2 years to lower this amount, with no success. We anticipate that this premium will be reduced in subsequent years because the cost reflects our lapse in insurance coverage, placing us in a high-risk category and that we would be offered quarterly or monthly premium payment options.
. . .

We are now asking our Hickory skiing family to do their part in supporting our efforts to re-open the mountain for skiing with lifts operating by purchasing season passes.

We are finishing up the purchasing platform on our website skihickory.com. We will have individual passes for upper and lower mountain skiing, couples discount, family packages, and bundled as well as single day tickets available. We will publish pass prices when we go live for pass purchases, anticipated on December 1st.

If the lifts don’t spin, we will refund season pass payments in full.

I was talking about the Times Union article. I know the pitch, Su made to me directly as few days ago. If they sell 76 adult passes, they'll have insurance, and the potential to open, if it snows. The nut is 38k.
