Hickory Ski Center Might Be Reopening

Do they address this in the annual report or elsewhere? Do they say they goal is to grow skier visits?

I was kind of teasing when I asked this, I think X knows that.

He can wish it all he wants, he skis Stratton and out west!

Hickory Update: All lifts are functioning and have passed state inspections. The last step is to secure insurance, which has been expensive due to the coverage lapse. They are trying to secure coverage and hope to still open for the end of this ski season

Here's the full email:

All 4 of our lifts are in prime operating condition and all specifications for safety have been met, including new signage, extensive clearing of lift-lines, rewiring of safety circuits, and completed engineering and insurance inspections. For the last 2 years we have been engaged with the help of Upstate Agency, with multiple insurance companies, both special policy purveyors for the ski area industry and special products companies. We have generated some leads, some interested carriers, and have a quote on the table. Because of the 2-year lapse in coverage, the premium cost of a policy is daunting. We are in the process of considering options and attempting to negotiate a more reasonable coverage premium. We anticipate that if we gain coverage in the near future, for a calendar year, we will be able to open for some skiing days this season and the 23-24 season as soon as snow conditions allow.

For all our die-hard Hickory fans, we know your frustration, and for new Hickory friends, we share your anticipation of skiing The Legend. In the meantime, the corn snow is fantastic.

We have had a healthy turnout for skinning, sledding and snowshoeing enthusiasts and are looking forward to a continuing relationship with the Thurman Connection Snowmobile Club and our tie in with regional snowmobile network of trails.
We have completed a remake of the old ski patrol building into a warming hut, the 3 Sisters Café’ will be re-opening as mountain use increases. We will be introducing “wagon“ skiing and “top o’ the mountain” tours, more snowmobile and ATV touring as we train up our staff as guides and Mother Nature gives us a spring dump or two.

We are enduringly grateful to Bill Van Pelt, IV, majority stockholder of Ski Hickory Hill, Inc. for his financial support in prior years and his continuing support through this re-generation process. He has funded all the infrastructure upgrades, provided payroll for our two full-time employees and numerous part-time workers. The Hickory Legacy Foundation is providing financial support in furthering their healthy living, ecological, historic preservation and education mission. Their purchase of lighting for the lower mountain and remodel of the lodge upstairs will enable us to open for skiing 5+ days and evenings a week which is critical in creating a financially viable ski season and viability for year round operation.

If you love Hickory, you know we can’t give up. We hope you hang in there with us, and if you have a business idea you would like to try out at Hickory, let us know.

“Hickory Hike 4 Kids” on June 17 Will Raise Funds for Return of Youth Skiing

Hike up the Legend so the lifts can run for kids in 2024!

(Warrensburg, NY, April 26, 2023) The Hickory Legacy Foundation announced today a day-long celebration and fundraiser to benefit the return of youth skiing at the Hickory Ski Center in winter 2024. “Hickory Hike 4 Kids” will feature a first-ever community hike up the recently renovated hiking trails on the mountain; an outdoor BBQ picnic featuring local food, beer, and wine, family games (including disc golf); and a rocking local band. Hike participants for the round-trip hike to the top will begin at 11am. Alternative hike routes will also be available for other ability levels. Admission for non-hikers to join lunch, activities, and music is $10 online or $15 the day of the event.

The Hickory Ski Center and The Hickory Legacy Foundation have made transformative renovations and upgrades to the legendary Warrensburg mountain over the past three years. Most recently Hickory opened the 3 Sisters Café; renovated the Johnny B’s Lounge (which is available for events); and cleared 15 miles of trails for all levels of hikers. This summer will also welcome an 18 hole professional level disc golf course on Hickory.

“Hickory Hike 4 Kids” will be the foundation’s first major public fundraiser. The event will raise funds for lift operations for the lower part of Hickory starting 2024 – so that the mountain can return to being a beloved place for local and regional children to learn how to ski.

“Hickory is being reborn – as a destination that will continue its commitment to introducing children to the joys of skiing, and also as a year-round location for recreation and eco-education,” says Clint Braidwood, chair of the Hickory Foundation. “We have real momentum – courtesy of the vision and patience of Bill Van Pelt, and our strong community of supporters. What better way to support this mountain jewel, than by going on a morning hike together, and enjoying bands, brews, and barbecue on the lodge’s front lawn.”

Additional details:

o “Hickory Hike 4 Kids” registration is available at https://myevent.com/hikeforhickory, and for direct contributions to support Hickory’s youth ski initiative.

o 3 Sisters Café, which opened in fall 2023, will be opening for Friday evening and weekend breakfast and lunch with a new menu starting May 12.

o In summer 2023, Hickory will begin a youth eco-learning program for children 7 to 18. Registration will soon be open for weekly sessions during July and August

The Hickory Legacy Foundation began in 2022 as a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote healthy lifestyles through recreational activities for youth, educate youth about the ecosystem of the 3 Sisters Range, sustain the range’s ecosystem, and preserve the historic value of one of New York’s first ski areas.

The Legend Lives On

We are sending this email to our subscribers to update those who are not active or following us on Facebook.
We had a great skinning, snowshoeing and sledding season and trails are dry enough for hiking now. We have modified our pricing for access, so check out the website for specific information. Skiing season passes and tickets will not be available until we have insurance in place.

Our current projects include building our 18-hole professional level disc golf course which should open in June, setting up our summer configuration, planning summer youth programs, raising funds to support kids skiing, preparing for June 17 Hickory Hike for Kids event, continuing negotiations on insurance coverage and lift inspections, and developing a robust Hickory community of families, donors and sponsors. Our anticipated microbrew taproom is pending licensing for production and sales.

The 3 Sisters Cafe’ will reopen for Friday evening BBQ on May 12th, 4-8, followed by breakfast and lunch menus on Saturdays and Sundays, 9-2. Menus will be posted on Facebook.

We have other adventures we are exploring to be able to sustain ongoing operations at the mountain. Let us know if you have any questions, are interested in Hickory Legacy Foundation volunteer opportunities, or know of anyone seeking food service employment.

ONWARD

No way to fuck up the natural environment better than 18 holes of disc golf! Sure getting wasted outdoors with your buddies can be fun but I can think of about 10 different activities one could accomplish this without trampling native ground cover, scaring trees and turning an otherwise pleasant natural setting into a game of dodge duck and dive for hikers.

They tout it as a "professional level disc golf course”, so there’s that.

Should pair well with a dang professional level zip coaster thingy

I'm glad I didn't send Sue a link!
