Have you ever had your gear stolen?

Do the carbon poles still break when super cold. Watched one break in front of me while on line..the whole tip just broke off about 4 inches from the bottom.
I have done this (break the bottom 4 inches off) with aluminum poles. It is from skiing over your poles and cutting them with your ski edges. This was more common when I was skiing 205/208/210 length skis. I have a pair of Leki Combo Alu/Carbon poles for 20 seasons now. The bottom half of the shaft is carbon and the top is aluminum. My wife has a pair of Goode Super-max full carbon for 20 seasons. She does not ski much anymore, so those have become my backup pair. They are both super light. I would not hesitate to buy carbon poles again.

Lock up shit when new, ski the crap out of it so no one in their right mind would steal it, stop locking it up.

Oh, I did have a pair of skis and poles stolen once. The skis were a pair of K2 Axis, I bought them used from the same guy I bought a Buell Lightning from. He begged me to take his poles, I didn't want to, I had a nice pair of Kerma graphite poles. I took the poles. I didn't think the K2's were in an danger of theft. I guess I lingered in the bar too long, gone. I was more pissed they took the poles.

So I used the poles that the guy begged me to take for the next ten years, or so, till one spring day at K. I tried to scrape a hole in the corn snow by the quad to stash a drink. The pole snapped in half, aluminum. I was bummed because nothing was open at K. My buddy said not to worry, he was sure there was a pole or two under the quad. We scanned the ground on the ride up. Bingo! Skied down and grabbed it. It was a tad longer than my remaining pole, but was alot better than skiing bumps sans poles.

I advertise for them on the door to my shop
Camp: while speaking with my uncle (he lives a mile south of Elm Tree golf course) last weekend, he mentioned something I'd never heard before -- while between full-time gigs, my grandfather worked in the Greek Peak ski shop between 1958 and 1960. Were those the first two seasons it was in operation? A shame that he never told me about it while alive/would've been interesting to hear his stories. I know that he never skied so who knows what type of physical work he did.

Yes it was. I wonder if he didn't work at Chip's Kandahar at Greek Peak? Chips Kandahar was the ski shop at Greek Peak in those days, and it was owned by a close friend of mines father, Chip. That would be something if that's where he worked. In those days he had 3 stores, one at Greek, one in Cortland, and one in Ithaca.

He is also the one who started the Kandahar race in NY, here's a little history:

History of Kandahar:

Kandahar began in 1974. It is estimated there were about 80 racers the first year. Now we have over 600 racers and families each year who participate state-wide. It was created as an opportunity for kids who did not make state teams to continue racing throughout the season. The Kandahar name comes from the original sponsor of the race, Chip Armstrong. The name of the shop was Chip’s Kandahar in Cortland, NY.

Since the first year of this Jr III, IV, V race NYSSRA has sent a state team to Gunstock, NH for the Buddy Werner Championships – now called the Piche Invitational.

Development level ski racers gather from all over the east to clinic together on Friday

and race on Saturday in March. Fun is abundant at both our Kandahar Series and in

Gunstock.

For years Kandahar was run at Greek Peak. These wonderful events were prior to sophisticated snow making equipment. No matter what, the Greek Peak Ski Club got this event off. The race has always been a two day event. Families from around the state became acquainted and all present pulled together to make it happen. This event has always embodied some of the best aspects of ski racing, including friendly, healthy competition in a fun, family atmosphere. The foundation of the original event was based on the idea of athlete development and outdoor fun. Kandahar continues to this day to promote the same purpose.

Kandahar was held at Greek Peak until about 1991 and then began to move around the state. It has been held at Brantling, Holimon, West Mtn, and Gore Mtn. Due to the huge success and participation of this event, the Kandahar became a regional festival event in 2002, with Kandahar Festivals being held in the eastern, central, and western regions of the state. The top finishers from each of the festival event then compete at a

state-wide Kandahar Championship held at a different location each year.

Note: The history of the Kandahar dates back to the early 1900’s. Sir Henry Lunn organized what can be called the first formal Alpine Downhill in Switzerland in 1911. At stake was the Kandahar Trophy (donated by Lord Roberts of Kandahar, India). Sir Henry’s son, Arnold is credited with inventing the modern slalom in 1922 in a competition at Murren, Switzerland as well as with championing the push to include alpine skiing in the Winter Olympics. After a combined event at the 1936 Winter Olympics, Alpine Skiing emerged in its own right in the next Winter Games in 1948 with downhill and slalom events.

Had a pair for 5 or 6 years. Fine in the cold, although I found they had a ton of flex to them, to the point where I thought they would break. I had to get used to that, especially when going hard in the bumps/spring.

Someone took my wife's skis at Mt. Snow a few seasons ago. They were seasonal rentals and pretty beat, so I think it was a mistake on their part. Never returned.

The next season someone walked off with her new skis at Killington, but they re-appeared on the rack an hour later. Again, a mistake probably.

We should probably use locks but are lazy.

About 10 or 15 years ago someone took my friend's Fischer RCS cross country race skis after the Lake Placid Loppet. My friend was freaking out, but I knew it was error because a pair of the same model in a different size (and perhaps different year) was left nearby even after almost everyone had left. It took some weeks to sort it out.

Well if you weren’t such a puss about booting up at your car none of this would have ever happened, obviously.

Had a friend's POS ski poles get stolen when we were in the Bear lodge in killington. She was going to go without poles the whole day, I though why do that, just 'borrow' someone else's generic ski poles. They will just continue the cycle.

As with the Goode carbon poles, when I got mine when they just came out, it was the thing to steal, especially in Hunter, so I always made sure I swapped one pole with my wife when we leave our skies behind during lunch, etc. Still got them, since they seem to be indestructible, unlike the alum poles that I had to replace every few years.

Got my SkiKey. They arrived with a 20% off code which said feel free to pass it on: Backfor20. Yellow key is also on sale. Small investment for the big investment.
