Gore Mountain Conditions

I failed the ink spot test yesterday... Sunway Chair was open so I elected to use it thinking I could switch over to Lower Sunway trail. I was helping a couple of ladies, one of whom was having a hard time with the initial steepness below Sunway Chair. Otter Slide was blocked by crossed marker poles. On the trail map there should have been a connection to Lower Sunway trail directly below Otter Slide. There was a sign "To Sunway" but it was blocked as well? And for good reason since there was extremely thin cover with rocks showing! We picked our way thru to Lower Sunway. Was Pete's Paradise our only option off Sunway Chair? It really looked like this "To Sunway" connection is being eliminated.

So they built an entire quad chair with a belt loader specifically to make it easier for inexperienced skiers to get up the mountain, but they don't maintain the easy way down?

I'm sorry to report, we won't be interviewing Bone at this time.

Bone must be aware of all the criticism Gore is getting this year but he won't meet with a sympathetic stakeholder. He can't answer questions like "why is Belleayre (with all it's problems) doing so much better than Gore this year?" of "why no Sagamore yet?" or "why have even the green trails been awful this year?"
That's really weak leadership.

IMO this is too personal. Bone's a decent guy.

There's no way he was going to voluntarily walk in front of the firing squad.

Maybe he felt that way, but that's not where I was coming from.

I learned from Mike Pratt that there are often barriers to enacting the most obvious and logical solutions. And you can't easily throw those barriers under the bus in an interview, because they come from the people you ultimately report too.

Because it looks like this interview isn't happening, I feel like I can be upfront about my own opinion:

Nobody's got capex budgets like ORDA. IF a private operator had those big capex budgets, and was short on help, they would probably dial back a bit on the new lifts and lodges, and invest something in human capital. Well, maybe Vail wouldn't do that, but I don't see their model as sustainable or even popular.

I think that everybody wants the same thing...the Gore faithful, Gore management and ORDA: the mountain to thrive. It would be beneficial to have a dialogue. As Harvey said, there are some things that are a hard no. If the higher ups knew what we were seeing on the ground and we knew what things like from their various perches, it could be a productive conversation.

First time at Gore today this season after avoiding it hearing all the snowmaking horror stories. They were not overblown. Conditions ranged from good on the lower mountain for the first hour to ice sheets on 46er and Echo. The random rocks, dirt patches, and obstacles were as advertised here on the forum. New Hudson chair is nice though.

Had a good day but very much looking forward to Whiteface tomorrow. Everyone I rode up with who has skiied it vs Gore this season attests that conditions are excellent there. Also they were only there for there kids races, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered. This was a common theme that was solicited unprompted.

I won't be back until they literally get feet of snow. That's the only remedy for all the snowmaking woes at this point. I love Gore, have put up with getting "Gored" many a time, but the snowmaking this year with this stretch of weather is inexcusable. I doubt we'll be skiing Rumor this year at this pace. If we do it's going to either be all ice or on natural.

Did anyone see any guns going anywhere on the mountain today?
It was not cold enough to make snow today, but shockingly, I did not see any evidence of them setting up for the next phase. No guns staged for Sagamore, Uncas, Rumor, Lies, Open Pit, or anywhere else. Normally during warm ups, you set up for the next phase. All other ski resorts do it.

Never doubted your intentions, I just don't think there was any possible way for it to come out positive for him at this point reaction-wise.
