Gore Mountain Conditions

It was a great day today - snow was crisp at the beginning of the day on Moxham and softened up all over the mountain. I skied everything except the front side and Rumor, and it was all great. Uncas and Lies were faves, but Sagamore was my ROTD. Couldn’t get enough after lapping it in the morning did it one more time on my way back to the car at 1pm and it was still great.

Twister to Cedars was a necessary slog, but otherwise everything was fun in the sun.

Coverage was pretty good - temps look promising after Sunday’s rain to get another weekend out of Bowl and Burnt Ridge? Maybe? Hard to say. Good Friday might be a stretch but there still could be decent cover on the summit if next week’s forecast stays for another week.

An obstacle.
Just move along & go around.

How large is this obstacle?
If it rattles could be a moraca.
Ski patrol should be able to identify it for ya.
About 8 feet tall. The sphere is about 3 ft diameter.

Don't most expansions happen at lower elevations?

I guess in Michigan they do add soil to summits to raise them.
Not really. All depends on where there is appropriate land available.

The Massanutten expansion was on private land on the upper mountain. The new terrain at Steamboat that included a new lift was on the upper mountain. Loon added terrain on the other side that created a viable secondary base and a closer connection to town.

Sunday River has been expanding terrain slowly but surely under Boyne Resort ownership. In general, improving snowmaking infrastructure, updating lifts, and adding terrain for the long run is something that Boyne has done very well in the last couple decades. People thought they were crazy to put in fancy D-line 8-packs in little used terrain at SR and Boyne Mountain. The end result was that more people would head to those pods, and there were shorter lines at other lines closer to the main base. Boyne is about to make a similar upgrade at Big Sky that will make skiing in the Madison area (former Moonlight resort) that much more fun.

Snow coverage seemed to hold up well on the upper mountain, but was fading fast down low. I missed High Peaks today, but skied all other parts of the mountain. Spring conditions everywhere. It was uncrowded with the Ski Bowl and Burnt Ridge especially deserted. BRQ running on diesel again. I wonder if that will be for the rest of the season.

Looks well covered.
With colder temps coming in maybe we’ll try to get up there for some turns ⛷️ sometime this week.

It’s really frustrating that Rumor and Lies have been listed as open all day and remain marked open online, but are actually very much closed. Really pathetic

They weren't groomed overnight. How is the ungroomed today?

The Tuesday marketing report is already up at 2:55 on the website. Lies and Hawkeye are listed as groomed and open, Rumor and Chatiemac ungroomed and closed.

The ultimate decision of whether a trail is open is up to the ski patrol that inspects it. Probability that it gets communicated to whoever writes/updates the report is variable.

^^That's what I was thinking.

Even with the unexpected trail closures today, it was still a pretty awesome day. Topridge, and Burnt Ridge were highlights and had most coverage. Many runs were firm up top but softened up at the bottom and there was a bit of snow in the afternoon. Sagamore was soft the whole way down.

Really hoping Gore gets some significant snowfall with this upcoming storm because they need it! So many bare spots, so happy I brought my rock skis! Its quite frustrating also seeing the footage out of Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire and how much more coverage they have. By the looks of it the headwall of Rumor was showing some signs of repair so hoping they can do a bit of snowmaking or get some decent snowfall. I'm hearing reports Boyne at Loon and Bromley are firing up the snow guns this week to do some maintenance. Can't imagine Gore or Whiteface have plans.
