Earliest Big Event You Remember

I saw the Challenger blow up on TV. When we saw it we were like what? No one in the room I was in understood what we were seeing at first.

Munson was possibly my favorite ball player of all times. There was something about him. He was a clutch hitter, a good catcher, a team leader. Often in the most clutch situations you just need to put the bat on the ball and drop it into the outfield, to get a Mickey Rivers across the plate. Munson was the man.

Today in 1994 I was huge hockey fan I was completely opposite person when they won the cup
Amazing how 25 years later I changed for better

Challenger explosion for me. I have a memory of being in school and they showing it to us live (I guess there were some teachers aboard, so it was a big thing in schools).

Great job, school administrators.

Nixon trials..Saturday Night Live had a field day with that. And our first color TV..Star Trek in color...holy canoli..red shirts....

The Olympic torch came through Fishkill on its way to Lake Placid for the games in 1980. They closed Route 9 as the runners relayed the flame. Our entire elementary school came out to see it pass by. My Mom took my sister and I out of school and we went up to the Roosevelt Mansion in Hyde Park to see them light a memorial flame at his grave which was followed by a minute of silence.
I’ll never forget the high of running down the driveway along side the runner with the torch. I was six years old.

Eating cake, ice cream and pie are first big events remembered by me. All homemade.

I think I weighed in earlier in this thread. I can remember some very early stuff, back to when I was only a year old but I thought the first big event that I remembered as it happened was the 1980 Hockey game Vs the Russians. Upon reflection I realize it’s probably Thurmon Munson’s plane crash. That was earlier. I remember the hostage crisis and the 1976 election, the late 70s Yankees and tons of personal stuff from the 70s but that doesn’t really count.

That made a big impression on me too but I’m older. I didn’t watch it live. I was in study hall. A teacher came in and told us. The guy was always joking around so I thought it was a dumb joke- didn’t believe it was true right away.
