For the general skiing public in North America that’s true. Those statistics aren’t the same if you are with an experienced partner. When I lived out West and in Europe we always skied with transceivers and shovels. I refused to ski with partners many times who were without. Ski one at a time and always wait for each other in safe zones. Shit can break from high above and bury people even on a groomer, which has happened. You can get caught in slough, carried over cliffs and buried. Knocked out in the trees or fall into a tree well. I can point to many incidents where these scenarios have played out. Lifts or no lifts, it makes no sense to me to ski alpine terrain without basic safety gear.Hate to be Debbie downer, but I just read that wearing a beacon inbounds will just make it easier to find your body. Statistics are bad. Maybe if everybody was required to carry a shovel and beacon, that would work, but, nah gonna happen.
