My grandpa was a grandfather clock builder. He wanted us all to have a clock he built. I'm the oldest grandchild so I got to pick mine first. The wood is from a black walnut tree that came from the farm he grew up on. It's one of my most prized possessions.

I'll add, because most find it pretty amazing, that my grandpa only had 1 arm. He had his right arm ground off, when he was 7, in a corn grinder. That never stopped him from doing anything!

E.O Wilson lost vision in one of his eyes as a kid fishing in Alabama, got 20/10 vision in his other eye, got good at studying ants &“discovered" fire ants. Won a Pulitzer for his book “The Ants". Became a great biologist, writer & teacher.
