Any Day, Any Race

Chapeau to Shifrin and the US alpine team. Cross-country gets started in a few weeks, let's goooooo!

Noway’s ski team had a rough few days in the 1st week of World Cup alpine skiing.

Last year’s Wold Cup slalom champ quits the men’s team.

& one lady's skis tested positive for fluoro wax, so she was DQ’d.

On the nordic side, Johannes H. Klæbo is on the outs with the national team over sponsorship conflicts. Right now, he won't be starting any nWorld Cups. Same thing with Petter Northug Jr. several years ago. Like any pro athlete, they've got a shelf life and they want to maximize earnings.

Insofar as the fluoro DQ, I'm gonna sit back with a bowl of popcorn to see what happens. Zach Caldwell posted about cleaning irons, brushes, and other work gear to get everything free of fluorocarbon. It's a process. Norwegian wax squad is prolly bigger than the Saranac Lake High School student body. I wouldn't be surprised if someone missed cleaning one of hundreds of brushes.

His mom's Brazilian. Maybe they’ll pick him up.

Or maybe the German made Bruker FT-IR testing instrument lacks specificity for one of the new proprietary racing waxes.

Now FIS will have fingerprint of who’s using what when. 🤔 Nothing to see here, please move ⛷️along .

The Norwegians aren't persistent dopers like some other teams. But individuals can do stupid things. See Martin Johnsrud Sundby, who had a Tour de Ski win and a World Cup title vacated due to excessive use of salbutamol:

Then there's Therese Johaug. Banned after using an OTC lip balm that was clearly labeled as containing a banned substance:

Bruker’s "official” testing instruments are pricey.
Here’s a recent discussion of FIS nordic fluoro testing.

And the denouement: as I had conjectured, a contaminated tool was the culprit.
