Gore Mountain Conditions

Not true, there is no limit on the draw from The Hudson.
Well at least that’s good news. One less impediment to snowmaking.

Though to be honest, it was easier to accept that the weather was to blame, rather than apparent poor management decision making.

The answer is yes. Generally they tend to be forums, not blogs. Like this one.

Alpine Zone, K Zone, etc, etc.

The people who return year after year often have ties ... social groups, race teams, real estate... that keep them coming back.

Why do you keep coming back?
I fell in love with the lack of crowds and diversity of terrain during covid so bought some real estate. I like to think of it more as curiosity as to why things occur the way they do rather than flat out complaining, but i do like to get a good complaint in from time to time :ROFLMAO:

Honestly I think Gore does a great job, just like how your own house always seems to have more imperfections than the others guys, you notice things more when you are there all the time.

The Summit skied much better today. Loose granular but very little ice. Better grooming. Topridge was a bit worse for wear but enjoyable. Pine knot was in good condition.

The main mountain was in decent condition, but most trails were skied off once you hit the lower third.

The North Side is holding up pretty well.

In terms of the crowds, I left at midday and cars were parked halfway down between lot G & H. Despite that, there were minimal lines and the slopes didn’t seem that crowded. Surprising.

** Snowmaking update: I spoke to someone who was under the impression that Gore has a much lower total allowance for water use this year compared to prior years. Perhaps secondary to the very dry Fall season? If that’s true, I guess management is saving some of their allocated water given the upcoming rain. Who knows?
I had the opposite take, but maybe because I avoid days like this that I know will be crowded like the plague.
By mid day every lift except Topridge and Straightbrook had long lines, even North Quad. Trails packed with testosterone-driven adolescent straight liners. Conditions started out very good but the heavy traffic skied it off by mid day.

It’s not conditions, but I wanted to jump in to say that while I love Gore the slow start has had me at WF 2 out of my 4 days so far, including Friday which was an awesome day at WF. I skied Wilmington Trail 3 times which may have matched the number of times I had ever skied it before.

I do think the weather is a factor for Gore - it seems every we have had 2” this season WF has had 4-6 or 5-7. But if Gore wasn’t making snow during the day on Friday as someone said here, that is a huge failure of management and/or staffing. WF had guns going ALL OVER Little WhiteFace Mtn on Friday, while still allowing for a good combo of Mtn Run and Thruway to be open and a great route down. as well there was some serious stockpiling going on in the lower part of the mountain, clearly piling up snow to the side of the trails, planning for the warmup.

So I’m bummed I haven’t been to Gore since 12/8 but WF has just clearly been the better option.

Here’s hoping Jan is better!

I drove (raced) to Gore early on Friday... arriving a bit after 8. Lot D was still not full so I parked there and took the waiting parked shuttle. I was on the mountain by 8:40. Had a great 2 to 2.5 hours. Then the crowds kind of drove me off the mountain but I was planning on quitting early anyways. I was annoyed to find Lot D was allowing the single file parking down the middle between the established rows. I had pulled in facing the access road... big mistake. Next to me was a monster size SUV, parked close of course. On the other side... a double cab truck with a long bed. Basically I had to do an inch by inch series of K turns to back out. All this while a car impatiently waited for me! Of course they could have gotten out and helped tell me my clearances as I inched out. Next time I will BACK IN or do a PULL THRU parking spot if I am there on a busy day.
I mention the crowds because it was standing room only in the lower mountain 'lesson' corral. Organized... yes. But crazy busy. As I was leaving a bit after noon it was clear others were leaving as well. When I got home around 1 I checked the base webcam. While still busy the crowds really had dispersed well. Made me wonder... If I come to Gore on the weekends with my elementary aged grandson, should we consider arriving at noon and staying later into the afternoon? Rather than do the early morning race to the mountain? We usually only ski for at the most 3 to maybe 3.5 hours. Are there some advantages to arriving mid day? Warmer for sure. Maybe even steal one of the closer vacant parking spots?

Obviously a much bigger discussion, but I wonder if ORDA has explored employee transportation options for residents further south - Queensbury, Saratoga, Lake George, etc., as I’m sure that is half the battle for anyone 18-25 years old. I’m probably just talking out of my a@*, but I can’t help thinking of all the exchange student employees I’ve met in mountains over the years who were given room and board by the resort. Not an option for Gore since they have no dormitories, but what seems to be the main issue is that the young folks of the greater Johnsburg area are not trying to work in Johnsburg, and a transportation option seems like a potential solution. Again, I’m ignorant of the details of what I’m proposing, but I can’t help but wonder if there is an untapped demographic in some of those southern towns/cities.
Gore used to have child care available to employees downstairs in the main lodge. It went out at the beginning of covid, and hasn't returned. Along with low pay, lack of housing, and lack of transportation support, I suspect lack of child care is adversely affecting ORDA's ability to hire and retain quality employees at Gore.

spot on Dmoss

Great snow if you like variable spring. But not if you have folks who do not enjoy that.

Would be cool if Sunway chair was running but I get it there is like 1 trail over there.

Thankful they pulled off what they have. Chatty and Hawkeye were super fun yesterday ski by feel with more bare spots on chatty. No blue from top.
