Yes You Need Snow Tires

In college I drove a E36 BMW 318ti with full winter tires and sand bags in trunk...
You musta been a rich kid. I had 1958 Biscayne with whatever tires I could find. Its value doubled every time I filled the tank. I used to take pictures of it in front of the old Spruce lodge because no one believed it would make it that far. Ran it off the road several times but I learned a lot about vehicle dynamics.

"Anti-lock brakes, AWD and good tires help but can’t fix stupid."

Yup. When SUVs were first a thing in the mid 1990s, I used to see a lot of them in ditches when it snowed. People seem to have acquired more sense in the last few years.
People learned they could "go" in AWD but they forgot that when it comes to stopping every car has AWB (All Wheel Brakes)

Lived in The North Country along the St Lawrence for 56 years have skied here all my adult life ......haven't had snow tires on since 1975. Drove stick shift FWD Saabs ,V dubs and in the last 10yrs Awd Toyotas and Awd Subies.

Been out at nite in some god awful Whiteouts and just kept chugging along no problems.Drove Many times in blizzards on business trips between here and Albany thru the Daks . Always had shovel sand and emergency kits never needed them .

It's the Indian ,not the Arrow. !??

Learned how to "drive" snow conditions as a kid growing up outside Utica

Hah! Trying driving in the NC mountains when it's snowing. Usually the car that's down in the ditch is an SUV with out-of-state plates from a state farther south the NC.

I spent a couple decades driving front-wheel drive minivans in NC. Knew enough to drive around Lake Placid and New England with snow on the ground. Never really worried about the road conditions near my house. But usually stayed home if my driveway wasn't dry because of the drivers who have no idea how to adjust for slick roads and black ice.

MM you must be like me, older than dirt. I leaned to drive on early to mid 60s big American boats, rwd, biased ply tires, drum brakes w big V-8s. Lot of dynamics going on, along w swing weight. Could bury the speedo in the driveway on glare ice(120) and get up to 5mph. Only when parents weren't home though.

I have not felt the need to have snow tires since I put great all season tires on my AWD CR-V. I literally have replaced and sold brand new factory tires in order to buy all season's that I know and trust.

Since I don't drive like a bonehead and know I stop like a 2WD, then I've generally felt comfortable with good all seasons. It helps that I can work at home and only go out in really snowy weather to go to the mountain :)

If you had an E36 in college I'm old enough to be your father. E36s were still in production the first time I retired.

More spot on that your probably old enough to be my father, my 318ti was made the same year I was born and only cost me $2,500, so no I wouldn't say I was exactly a "rich college kid" lol. Even new that car went for $19,000 making it one of the most inexpensive BMW ever.
