Windham Mountain Going Private?

We'll see how it all shakes out. I can't imagine committing six figure money to be locked into a low angle hill, but then again I'm not wealthy.
Exactly my thought when I skied there one day two years ago out of total curiosity and hate of Hunter and my Ikon pass. Holy crap, there's Telluride and Vail worthy houses that are ski in and out to rained on flat icy Catskill garbage. Bizarre. Let them have it, and, in five to ten years, it will go belly up, as it deserves. Money certainly does not buy taste.
The Catskills can be weird. I never got 600 a night rooms midweek at Mohunk, either, but, NY metro certainly is home to a lot of money to waste.

Could the real estate purchases at Windham be more about the other three season than the ski season? Maybe the slopeside skiing is just a bonus to the investors there. The skiing may not always be that great but it’s a beautiful place and a short drive that feels worlds away from NYC.

It will be interesting to see how they treat all the retired cops and firemen around there,
There has been a special season pass call Hometown Heroes. Quite a discount over the regular passes. The Transferable Pass is unusual.

Windham (285 acres) reminded me of Jiminy Peak (170 acres) and Waterville Valley. (265 acres) when I stopped by a few years ago. I used my Ikon pass to check it out for a few hours in the morning before heading towards Plattekill. The base buildings of Jiminy are smaller but clearly look like part of a resort. For the size of the mountain, there is plenty of slopeside lodging, including a timeshare resort. The WV lodge is pretty basic. But WV has plenty of property owners in the village who don't ski anywhere else in the northweast. The season passes for JP and WV run $1000-1400, with some unusual value options. JP and WV are 4-season resorts that cater to multi-generational families.

I have no dog in this fight and have a negative bias against the place ever since their unmaintained lifts dripped oil all over a new jacket of mine and stained it beyond repair.
It’s funny how grudges work. I’m still mad because we were kicked off the mountain for throwing helicopters off a mogul at the bottom of Wedel in high school. The patroller said there was no jumping allowed on the mountain. He wanted to clip our tickets but since it was the last run of the day and the lifts were closed we were escorted off the mountain on his sweep. Went back years later with my nephew and they had a full blown terrain park with huge kickers. Go figure.

It’s very simple really. What are the alternatives? Waiting on line at Hunter? Driving to Mt. Slow and waiting on line there? Belle and Platty don’t have slopeside real estate yet. That will surely come eventually. Buying a farmhouse nearby on 100 acres is not for everyone. People don't want the constant work never mind the caretaking hick that comes with it. You have to drive everywhere and none of your cityiot friends who visit have cars. Lots of mice and no cell service. People want new. They also want to socialize. That’s what the clubs offer.

Six figures is nothing. These people will also go out West and maybe Europe. They might have a house there too.

The roll out of this whole thing is a disaster. The website looks like I made it. They didn’t even change the name, just added the word club. I don’t play golf but skeet shooting sounds fun. Fly fishing? Cool. Hudson River Outpost? OK. Something fun for everyone especially when friends visit. All they have to do is throw around the word legacy. Wealthy people will pay any amount of money to have their grandchildren like them.

Yellowstone Club, Spanish Peaks and Moonlight Basin did all go bankrupt. I’ve been to all three and they are all back in business and doing well. In fact they never skipped a beat. It’s hard for most of us to understand but it works to some people’s advantage to lose money.

The Catskills are weird, that’s true. There was once over 500 resorts there. Many had skiing too.

Mohonk is a special place. $600 is a lot for one night. It also includes breakfast, lunch and dinner for two. We spent more than twice that on our honeymoon for a tower room. Totally worth it. No place like it. As my dad would say, “We‘re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time.”

Agreed. Question is how will each of the other three handle it?
I think Bell and Hunter will get the brunt of this.. Platt is not everyone's cup of tea.. people like high speed lifts and nice big lodges...

Some of these skiers may well go to SoVT.

Certainly not scientific but >

I met a mom here in NJ recently who asked me about Windham. She had been invited by friends and wondered about it. She told me she regularly skied Stratton, and when she went out west it was always Park City or Deer Valley. She indicated that those were the only places she'd ski.
