Where are you skiing this week?

I parked next to a van at Gore last weekend two days in a row with a small exhaust pipe coming out of it, it ran all day, both days. A heater I assume. I guess that would that be propane? Seems weird to run it all day with no one in it.

Maybe their pooch was in it

My van heater sips from my gas tank, other people’s run off of diesel.

Agree that they are probably trying to keep a dog or wife warm all day.

Listen, I’m not one to judge (because I bought a van to sleep in), but I don’t understand how you could pay $80,000 for a truck & then decide that it’s better to sleep in that than in a $100/night hotel room that has a shower & a toilet.
You can't get a hotel room for even 3x that within 30 miles of Killington. I'm sure it's a similar situation at other resorts.

Didn't seem like diesel, that would have been noticeable. Maybe gas. How much does that system use in say 8 hours if it is 20 degrees out? Is it on a thermostat? I'd like to get something like that for a pickup.

Dog sounds believable. I'd think with people there would have been some sound. Maybe not.

He’s going to Belleayre. Quick search says there is plenty of lodging around.

Not a lot. I ran it all night at Jay peak in -5°, heated the van to about 60°, and it used less than 2 gallons, I’d say.

The unit is expensive (Webasto), but I thought it was a better option than a tiny wood stove or a cheap Chinese diesel heater.

All good. Short answer is a combo of things but I generally don't spend money other than on experiences relatively speaking (or things that enable experiences), and like to test things out. It might be my infectious optimism, but I am kind of excited. No, I not full MMM (though starting to wonder if he is a poser).

Slightly longer answer -

  • we will be sleeping in the Rivian a bunch (admittedly mostly on top in the summer in a tent), so nice test run. Climate controlled and leveled. Yep, there is software for that.
  • I realize it is not facially consistent with spending this much on a car, but besides a nice modest house in a really good school district/commute, and travel/experiences, we don't really spend much money relatively speaking;
    • side note - the car actually enhances experiences we can have, and over 4 years, saves 10-12k so you could justify it that way; So like the cost of a friction' highlander.
  • I am a hobby stoic (I try to be a good stoic; read the collected works a year or two before it became such a pop culture phenom, and try to practice it), and now camp a bunch with my son so no big deal to sleep in the car. Keep in mind it is bigger than a queen size bed flat - can post a pic. If I really wanted to lux it, I could queen air mattress it.
  • I have a shower and toilet at the club, which will be 10 feet from where I am sleeping. I would sleep at the club but it is full of boycotts (not my kid's troop) this weekend. Even though members have a bunch of rights, I can't (and wouldn't want to) bump other people two days out, which is the case here as I decided to go up a day or two ago. Many showers and many toilets actually. It happens once or twice a year but the club is SOLD OUT this weekend.
  • I am the youngest of four boys, 3 in 4 years, grew up without resources, so I can deal with a fair amount. Doesn't seem like the marginal utility of a hotel is worth it over sleeping in the car. 100 goes pretty far at the Phonecia Diner, Brios, etc. or two months of home charging.
