Utah Conditions

Chase the tram at Snowbird and lap Wildcat at Alta. You could spend a day skiing each bell to bell a be ski god in my book. and " I do have a book ". Forecast looks favorable.

Flew out to SLC today, which went smoothly. The mountains are certainly imposing. Can't wait to go up in them tomorrow.

What a day! Utah and Solitude certainly left a good first impression. I ended up liking the Powderhorn area the best. It's bowl terrain just above the Moonbeam lift. While highly visible, it's often overlooked because it is served by a fixed grip lift, and had the best conditions by far.

The summit was really windy and had thin cover, so I didn't like it as much as I had expected to.

I took two runs in Honeycomb Canyon, one off the summit and one off Powderhorn. I liked the one off Powderhorn better. The area gets low skier traffic except the runout, and had really good conditions. The run I took off Powderhorn was also among the steepest natural terrain I've been on.

I also really enjoyed the groomers off the Eagle lift.

I noticed throughout the day that I had better adjusted to the terrain and altitude, so I felt like my skiing just got better.

The second run I did in Honeycomb Canyon, I think called Memorial Chutes.

I went to Snowbird today and it immediately jumped to number 1 on my list of favorite ski resorts.

What really sets it apart is how steep everything is. It's completely an expert's mountain. The only blue trails off Peruvian, Little Cloud, and Mineral Basin are a few narrow cat tracks. Trails rated single black are as steep as anything I've skied in the east, and trails rated double black often include very narrow chutes, some with mandatory straight-lining. There are basically no runouts anywhere. Trails stay steep all the way to the base.

The day didn't get off to a good start with multiple wind holds, but every scheduled lift was open by noon, and fresh snow was falling for the last 3 hours of the day. A lot of people must have left early because there was no crowd either.

It was so good that I was going to skip Brighton to get an extra day at Snowbird, but UDOT had other ideas, closing LCC for avalanche mitigation, so I guess I'll go to Brighton after all. Snowbird again on Tuesday.

This thread seems like a great TR, with some BS on the front end. Look for it to be broken out later this week.

Have a great time sno, we missed you at Belle! :)
