Today's Swim

if it’s an interview you want to do, I hope it works out for you. I trust you’ll bring moral questions for him, showing his true careless ethics. he just rubbed me the wrong way from the get-go. prying for stashes with an antsy attitude just to exploit them. now, he preaches leave-no-trace but doesn’t get that social media is part of it—let alone that his whole account is anti leave-no-trace. they are just words to him—zero comprehension behind the act. then people applaud him for not gate-keeping swimming holes 😂😂😂 wow, how that backfired, now you gotta pay to get in the gated community. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

furthermore, not a good characteristic if you’re willing to put time aside for him and he doesn’t care enough to show up… on multiple accounts.

There are paywalled apps for free public campsites, people are selling GPX files for bike routes and all kinds of similar things going on the internet. It sucks, the people and corporations doing it suck but, it feels inevitable in our current information age. I've got to wonder how many people would actually pay $250 for "direct access to all holes in ny". Paying for "direct access to all holes in ny" sounds like something entirely different to me but, I digress :ROFLMAO:.

“Extreme” Ryan Delena is selling ski routes in the Whites and Greens. Hope he doesn’t come to the Catskills.

@Low Angle Life 😂😂😂 hilarious

another depressing thing is that it could be a viewership tactic. post something that is controversial and stirs up comments—boom—your post gets views and interaction then shoots to the top of the algorithm. the basis of why he got so much attention from posting the sacred swimming hole from the start—not for his skiing. this is another reason not to engage in the hype—it only helps the account skyrocket. @Low Angle Life until you reiterated the price, I didn’t think how outrageous that sounds… people pay for wx forecast, guides and the like so didn’t think twice about the other tactics being viewership and engagement until now. could have been a dummy post for account engagement. still doesn’t make revealing swimming holes right.

@Ripitz it has reached the Catskills. just not for skiing unless you count resorts and hiking guides 😂 there is another Catskill IG account that paywalls for hiking tips and trails. he too was against gate-keeping lesser known hiking trails. then created a paywall account 😂🤦‍♀️

I interviewed Shane:

...he confirmed it in the interview.

This is a difficult topic for me. I write about all kinds of stuff.

Three years ago I rode a lift with a guy who told me I'd ruined Gore mountain. I haven't written about Gore since. Not sure that's an appropriate response, but I'm just not feeling it. The hate was visceral.

This winter I had an incredible day skiing in the Vanderwhacker Wild Forest with @BRLKED and an excellent crew of quality people from North River. I was dying to write about it, but I knew I couldn't.

I have a need to tell stories. I don't totally understand it.

Maybe I’m being a little bit hypocritical. I bought a hot springs book years ago in Montana that took me to some amazing places. I didn’t write the book but I did buy it. I guess now that print is practically dead, this new format is the modern day guidebook. Whatever, I don’t have to like it. Stay off my lawn!

Yeah, I’m against gatekeeping and localism generally but I’m also against ruining cool spots through overuse. Is a Patreon any different than publishing a guide book? I mean other than nobody would ever have the balls to charge $250 for an Upstate swimming hole guide book? Is that what it really costs?

For that price I hope they get a kick-ass coffee table book and the table.
