Today's Swim

Matt was actually recommending that I make the advertising more intrusive. I was a digital marketing pro for two decades before I recently retired. I know: if you took out the header image of @Scottski63 on Plunge and replaced it with a big ad, it would likely triple annual ad revenue. He also wanted me to remove the (trademark!) radar shot that is on most pages and replace it with an ad. Not doing it.

Now that I'm retired, there are two things I am no longer getting for free, through work. One is hosting, the other is security/version updating.

Ad revenue, about $800 a year doesn't quite cover the hosting. I don't have a quote for the security updates yet, but it's likely going to be a lot for a retired dude.

I really don't want to charge for content or membership. Mrs Road REALLY wants to sell NYSB tee shirts, more for the fun of a joint couple activity than the money. If we can get that going (next summer?) maybe I can cover those cost.

FWIW I had a company offer me a small fortune (upfront and annual payments) to log 4 acres of our land, build a road and put up a cell tower. Not doing that either.

TLDR; there is some kind of change coming to the NYSB "business model."

Over the years we have had discussions about contributing. I am sure I am not the only one who would love to help keep this place going and reducing any monetary stress you might have from operations. Speaking only for myself, no strings attached.

I truly appreciate this. But i am the impediment here. Matt's appeals for money really turned me off. I'm not going there.

@Harvey thanks for the link to @Brownski ’s article. it’s a solid read and aged very well. DEC just recently put in a large parking lot to accommodate and finished it this spring. have yet to see it finished in person. I tend to avoid that valley during summer (except on a bike). but watched the construction progress this past winter.

@Harvey you could do an annual pledge drive like public radio stations if that’s a compromise for your morals. I donate to KBUT station out in Crested Butte. it’s a solid station and worth to keep it alive. in return, you can throw in the t-shirts and stickers as @Brownski is in favor above.

Regarding the Peekamoose Blue Hole: I don't think writing tickets is gonna cut it. Somebody's car gets towed, that's gonna get their attention. At the height of the covid lockdown, Gardiner and New Paltz cops were threatening towing for people parking illegally in the 'Gunks.

@Harvey now I understand why we had that discussion before you published The Space Between The Roads.
