Beginner and intermediate skiers can't cover the 15+ feet of distance I'm giving them in a couple of heartbeats. That's why the issue is mostly with (some) racers or other very fast skiers. They are moving fast and they are very nimble. I don't expect this kind of consideration from inexperienced or very young skiers. More broadly I don't think it's wise to "rely" on anything like The Code. The Code specifies general responsibilities and basic safety protocols, an experienced skier can and should do more to avoid accidents and ski like a considerate human being. When skiing past a certain speed making a sudden hard and severe turn without being aware of what's behind you is dangerous. It may not be your responsibility according to the code but it doesn't mean you can't be safe in that shared space. And just to be clear:No need, a just about anything is on topic in a thread like this. Like I said, I’m also not trying to be a pain in the azz. While all skiing involves slippery slopes, the slope you ventured into is super slippery. In the end, I think you need to be able to rely on The Code, and not do anything stupid. However, what to you is “unexpected and sudden” is just other skiers, with right of way, doing their thing and having fun, under control, within the construct of the ‘rules’ in place.
I guess it’s a little sensitive for me, as we have a new skier in the family, my adult son’s girlfriend. She probably makes as many “unexpected and sudden” movements as your problem racers. Are beginner to low intermediate (who are finding their feet on new blue squares) skiers now supposed to be looking over their shoulder also? Where do you draw the line about downhill skier movement vs. relying on The Code?
1) I'm not talking about all racers, it's just here at WF the folks that do this seem to be racers more than others in my unscientific anecdotal experience.
2) I'm not talking about beginners or even intermediate skiers at all
3) I'm not talking about racers on something like mountain run or some other groomed expert terrain. They can go for it and I stop, wait, and enjoy the show because they are often just awesome to watch.
I am talking about high speed experienced skiers occupying all of a high traffic area by making racing turns back and forth at unpredictable intervals.
Okay, I'm sounding like a whiner for sure now.
