The Generations of Music

Michael McDonald ruined the Doobie Brothers FOR ME. I Taylor Swift him any time he comes on the radio.
FIFY! :p

I’ll agree that I like some of their earlier work more (yes, pre-McDonald), but that’s true of most bands, for me at least.

Personal tastes aside (Dobbie Bothers did transition from more bluesy rock to having more soul influence after McDonald), one might argue that McDonald was good for the band. No, he wasn’t to the Doobie Brothers what Stevie Nicks (and Lindsey Buckingham) was (were) to Fleetwood Mac…..but I bet you like Fleetwood Mac better with Peter Green anyway…..however, McDonald may have presented to band an opportunity to not ‘Heart’ themselves. Heart went downhill when they started producing schlocky ballads to chance commercial results. I personally feel that McDonald offered a progression that helped the band at a time in their tenure that most bands need some kind of change. Taking it to the Streets was with McDonald if I’m not mistaken, I like the soulful styling of What a Fool Believes, and there was some other good post-McDonald Doobies.

You are on the clock….

There is definitely good music being made today. Last time MC railed against the old fogies he shared a song from a band called Eastbound Jesus that made it onto one of my playlists. Then there’s Frank Turner, Old Crow Medicine Show, Cage the Elephant. Of course time moves fast as you age.. Some of them might be considered old already.

I’m not saying there isn’t good music being made today, there certainly is. However much it is the result of me not being hip enough….I have a hard time identifying bands from the last few decades, current bands, who will be part of the discussion 50 years from now, as much as it may be in a generic classic way. I’m open to names of current bands you think will stand that test of time….go.

Uh-oh, here we go, I definitely do not listen to music when skiing. One of the most unsafe things ever, especially in the backcountry.

Sometimes the lodges at Lab & Song play tunes from their speakers on the roof.
I don’t bring any tunes with me on the hill other than what’s already runnin in my mind.

Oh right, my bad. Headphones, I don’t use them. Speakers in backpacks too, they gotta go.

Skiing, hiking, or running, in the backcountry, no music. I agree it's too dangerous but more importantly it takes away from the experience for me. Skiing inbounds or running in the city or local trails, I know it's marginally more dangerous but so is skiing after a couple of beers (or other judgment impairing substances) and I do that too. I'm talking about headphones, I would never put a speaker in my backpack.

Also, I'm not trying to start an argument about this. I respect and accept the judgement that I'll probably get. That said, I would find it hard to believe that I'm the only one in this thread that does this and I'm curious to hear what others listen to.
