The Colorado Ikon Tour

Copper is a big place and designed & organized well.
They had free buses ya could ride between the different bases but we always walked in the summer.
They have a Woodward Barn in the summer the kids practice there flips in too.
This was July 29th and the dang boarders were still having fun.

The busses from the free parking to the bases were a s@*t show…..I opted for the walk. Maybe 15 minutes to East Village from the far end of the lot? Good way to stretch the legs in the am, or wind down in the pm!

How do people do ski weeks!? I think I’d die if I had to ski 7 days straight.

Day 4 was back at A Basin. With multiple things sore, including some minor knee pain, I didn’t have lofty goals for a long day today. Yes, another late start!

I had a plan though. Warm up run, to Lightning Trees, to as much of the East Wall as my aching body could handle.

Lightning Trees didn’t disappoint. You could hit some scratchy base under some of the powder, but conditions were good. Lots of flow-y untracked lines.

Lightning Trees is a fun zone, and obviously not skied much. Off the top of the Zuma lift look right and take the high traverse out. A bit of a trek, and a few gates to pass thru, stay high then follow the rope line….then enjoy. If ever at A Basin don’t pass up the opportunity.

Sticking with the plan, it was off to the East Wall and the North Pole hiking gate. A 30 minute slog, give or take, to incredible views, and better terrain. The East Wall is a special place. Here it is in all its’ glory, with North Pole Chute indicated.

From there it was the traverse out toward the East Wall Tree Chutes.

I’d have to say…the place skied pretty good for 4 inches over the past three days!:p

Here are some shots of the surrounding peaks.

That looks sweet. Nice score. I like the pics. The series of shots gives a good idea of what the mountain is like. I’ve never been there. I assume the road is Loveland Pass?

There’s not much air at >10,000 feet. Pace yerself and keep havin fun.
  • Base elevation: 10,520 feet / 3,206 meters
  • Summit elevation: 13,050 feet / 3,978 meters (3rd highest ski-area peak elevation in North America)

Hiking at 13k has its challenges. Fortunately I’ve never had altitude problems. I may not be fast, but I get there!

Yes

I was too lazy to hike up there. Just zipped into the lower entrance and lapped from there.
