The Colorado Ikon Tour

The two 25-year locals I met at the bar last night pretty much exclusively ski Copper. That speaks volumes, so there it was today. Not many pictures because the snow started coming down heavy around noon.

I’ve only been to CO two other times, and I never gave Copper a thought. That was a mistake. Huge, nice terrain, great high alpine. I’ll probably come back on one of my remaining days.
Only skied Colorado, A-Basin, one day June 5th years ago.
Went to Copper for a weeklong meeting in the summer once.
The folks were real nice and so was the golf and scenery.
Lots of mountain bike trails too.

We also found a log-fort in the woods the local jokers must’ve built.

With snow (not really that much, either) the 13 mile drive from Copper back to Silverthorne took an hour and a half. I70 eastbound is closed at the Silverthorne exit. Glad I took an alternate route!

I’m sure Sundays eastbound are always going to have a delay of some sort, but shut down from Silverthorne to the other side of the tunnel may not be typical. From The Pad we could watch the eastbound traffic sit for hours, and even at 11pm it was at a crawl.

Thought about Winter Park for today but eastbound 70 is a mess this am from Silverthorne through the tunnel (still)….so back to Copper it is.

So….some days you are good (like, get there early on a powder day and beat everyone to it), and some days you are lucky. Today I was lucky.

As A-Basin was reporting 2” from yesterday vs. Copper’s 6” I decided to leave another day at A Basin until tomorrow. With some work to do in the morning, and some arrangements to make for next weekend at Placid/Whiteface, and a few other things….I got a slow start today. No matter, if I’m hiking/skinning and skiing steeps and powder I can go hard for 5 hours or so, plus I like to pace my self out West. Old legs and flatlander lungs and all. I didn’t get on the hill until 10:30.

Managed to get some lift served leftovers in Copper Bowl first thing.

My plan was to head over to the Mountain Chief chair to see if the West Ridge hike between Tucker and Union Peaks was open. Sadly, when I got there the hike was only open a short way. After transitioning and watching a half dozen people ski what was open I started talking to a 21 year old Denver-ite who is part of some freeride team. As we were chatting who starts hiking up towards us? Yup, Patrol. Right place, right time, Zaqueo and I were the first two down Lallarookn behind Patrol. I ended up skiing a few laps out there with Zaq. The 20 or so minute trek was well worth three laps. It hadn’t been open since Friday so it was boot top+ untracked powder. I ain’t gonna lie, when I come West that’s really what I’m hoping for! Yes, it was snowing, again, so the vis started like this…

….and ended like this.

Yes, I did ski some trees on the way back to base.

Copper is a great mountain. A ton of terrain, well organized so every ability level can find what they want, loooong modern/efficient lifts, some classic old doubles, t-bars, pomas, and every kind of terrain (although not much in the way of hairball steeps, not that I need those) most could want. Not much of an apres scene, but that’s ok. Thanks, Ikon, for getting me here.

A little more Rocky Mountain scenery for your viewing pleasure…
