Storm Skiing Podcast with Vail Inc. Eastern Head Honcho

Not sure there is a precise definition but you can get the general idea here:

No argument there. I don't care how cheap they make standing in line all day, still not something I'm excited about.
Yup.

Some people are really into numbers and less about the actual experience or maybe they just don’t know any better. I’m not sure but I definitely don’t get it. Honestly, they just sound cheap to me.

Right, because it is impossible to be into numbers and into the actual experience.

i think its human nature to look at the cost. unless your bill gates you would be an idiot not to. a country club membership cost around $5,000. If you play 40-50 rounds a year it works out to be $110 a round. certainly more expensive then you would pay at a public course. Its not about the money its the quality of the golf course and speed of round that put a premium on the price. I had a season pass to gore one year. snowfall sucked that year and I was dragging the family because we had a pass. i certainly would not have skied those days otherwise. I get the savings with a ski pass but I no longer like to be limited to one mountain and prefer to chase conditions. easy to do when you only ski 15 days a year.

Are you saying that someone who has a clear awareness of the cost of their ski hobby can't be a "real skier" who cares about ski conditions and terrain? Or did I miss the sarcasm?

In any case, I sense a northeast bias in this discussion about Epic. Since I neither ski the northeast most of the time, nor have Epic, my thinking is based on using the MCP and/or Ikon mostly for ski trips out west.

It's been very easy for me to choose between Ikon/MCP and Epic. I don't happen to be interested in skiing at Epic resorts. That was true when Epic didn't cover the northeast at all. Still true after VR bought resorts in New England and the mid-Atlantic since I don't live within day trip distance of any Epic location. It's not about the lodging, food, or EpicMix. It's a matter of the terrain, vibe, and typical snow conditions.

I'm also in the minority of Ikon holders who also have Indy. I'll use Indy in the east this season in more than one region.

No. Absolutely not.

I’m thinking of certain folks that I know personally.

I’ve been thinking a lot about our relationship to numbers recently though. More so about office workers that collect them from people working in the field and how numbers will never really tell a story or the show situational circumstances. That really annoys me.

Then I thought about someone I know that every time I run into him on a pow day his first question is, “how many runs did you get?”. Not because he really cares but only so he can tell me how many he got. It seems like some sort of dick waiving contest. I like him but that’s really annoying to me. I never give him a number, I always say I don’t know, even if I do.

Then I thought about the people buying an epic that predominantly ski the weekends and stand in those horrific lines to ski dangerously crowded slopes. The ones that keep doing it. They can’t be about the experience, or do they actually like that? Or maybe it’s more about the water cooler convos on Monday about their rad weekend at mountain x and what a deal their pass is and how they are headed to Jackson to wait 2 hours for a tram lap. Don’t tell me you don’t know those types, and yes, those are poseurs. These folks are annoying as well.

And finally, I thought about a conversation I had with someone on how him and his buddy’s would brag to one another about the deals they talked the ski shop employees to give them. These are wealthy professionals that can afford retail but think it’s cool to work over the small, mom and pop business owners. Thats really fucking annoying. I can’t stand that. That’s where my thoughts on “cheap” came from.

So no. I was all over the place in my thoughts but too lazy to write it all down but since you and 1000x posted like I hurt your feelings I felt like I had to.

I’ll also admit that I’m not always great at getting my point across. I do this in person too, I’ll say stupid shit without realizing it and meaning something else but it’s received as something very rude. It totally sucks and I’ll feel like such a jack ass but hey, life goes on. Imperfect human here ??‍♂️

I think I would just urge you take a second look some times. It’s pretty easy to spend other people’s money or poke holes in their decision making process. Most people are just trying to get through the day, just like you.

Is that what I did? I’m confused. Again, I’m pretty sure I clearly explained that it’s not pointed at anyone here.

I really don’t understand this post b-ski. Spend other people’s money? What’s this all about?

My comment had nothing to do with anyone on here at all. It’s more about my recent thoughts on numbers. I have a lot of time at work to get into my own head. This was literally the stuff I was thinking about this past week.
