Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

Very interesting regarding your insurance premiums. I don't have an answer as to why they would be so much more? It does seem odd!

Have you been to The Belvedere yet? If not, I highly recommend that you go. By far it's one of my favorite places to go out and eat.

I'll check this place out. The menu looks genuine: As my former employer used to say, Italian Italian, not Italian American. BTW if you're in SL and you want a change, check out Our Plates. Where I used to live in NJ was 65% Latino. Our Plates is the real deal for Dominican food.

I don't know about NC, but I'm on municipal water and sewer in the village. One less system to go wrong. Although the well water at Tmax 'n' Topo's is the best I've ever had.

Pros of living in Saranac Lake:

  1. Thriving arts scene. Both music and fine arts.
  2. Walking distance to downtown: my dentist, grocery stores, a good coffee shop, pharmacy, multiple restaurants and bars, and other retail establishments.
  3. Easy access to hiking, canoeing and skiing. Although we'll see what happens with parking at popular trail heads in the summer.
  4. Drivers are generally more laid back. Although I've seen a couple bonehead moves, there's nothing like the culture of "having to beat the other guy" that exists on NJ roads.
  5. There's probably more that will occur to me later.

Cons:

  1. Ingredients one needs to cook some cuisines are hard to find. For example, when I go to NJ for band rehearsal this weekend, I'm stopping at Wegman's to get things I need to make sofrito, a Puerto Rican condiment. Up here, cilantro comes in a little plastic bag. No bueno. I need a whole entire bunch of it.
  2. If one likes shopping big box stores, the nearest Target, Lowe's, etc are 50 miles down a 2 lane road in Plattsburgh. I never imagined I'd be doing this much mail order.
  3. I was surprised at some of the living costs up here. My health insurance premium is double what it was in NJ. My car insurance is 50% more. Perhaps some other, long-time UpState residents can weigh in on this. @tirolski ? @Campgottagopee ?
  4. Property taxes are collected in one lump sum rather than quarterly. Make it make sense.
Sofrito🔥
I cooked with a Puerto Rican guy for 20 yrs. It became my fav cuisine.
Any way save yourself some time and buy a few frozen Goya soffrito.
And some frozen recaito

I could buy Goya sofrito at the Hannford in LP. Trust me, even though I used to be a salesman: no comparison between Goya and homemade.

Even in NJ, it's hard to find culantro and ajies dulces.

And don't get me started about the so-called "bruschetta" in jars in the grocery store. Bruschetta is grilled bread that's been rubbed with a garlic clove and topped with basil, tomato, and fresh mozzarella.

Thanks for the detailed info Peter!

Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't asking you about the NC sewer system. Just throwing it out there, should have been a separate post.

The jar sofrito sucks. The frozen I can work with
Very hard to find culantro and the little peppers.
I love culantro. So much better then cilantro
