Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

You have to dig deeper to find out that 22% of houses are vacant because they're 2d homes.
I think we've seen this before and it's going to get worse. People with extra wealth are collecting houses and large swaths of land, driving up prices thus driving out the locals - - the locals that maintain the community and make a place desirable.

I'm looking at a house up there, there's an Air BnB right around the corner. There are people making a business of buying houses and turning them into short term rentals. It's outta control. My realtor telling me that people are taking the bus from Malone to work at Big Slide Brewery in LP.

EDIT: I'm finding places for sale in France and Italy cheaper than in the Tri-Lakes area. Amazing.

There’s really nice ski towns in The Dolomites.
I might have to brush up on the dialects.
Been there a couple times but only in the springtime. It’s nice.
Great people, food and vino.
Have yet to ski it.
Still on the bucket list.

Didn't get to the Dolomites the one time I was in Italy. One of my former employer's suppliers from up there wore lederhosen and spoke Italian with a German accent. Wondering if I could swing that somehow. It's easier for me to grasp Italian than French, FWIW.

I noticed this, too & it made me rethink what the second half of my life might look like.

Besides becoming conversant in the language, there's a lot more to consider. Let's just focus on the Dolomites for a moment. I don't know anyone at all over there. How easy is it to strike up new friendships in a foreign language? I'm interested in the Tri-Lakes because I know people there already, and have roots in the ADK. At the age that I'm at (card carrying AARP member :D ), the next move is likely going to be my last.

Living over there for a winter, that's a different story. This might be worth a separate thread.

Probably about the same as striking up new friendships in English.

Sure, I’d prefer to move somewhere where I know people, but those places seem very expensive.

Dolomites are vacation land for my people. I could intro you to people in Rome and Milan. They know some English, but are mostly downhill skiers, and not exactly core.

I think tri-Lakes would be awesome for you Peter.

Yes and without change in code and tax laws it will continue to gut communities.
