Ski Resorts Panicking About Cold Weather

It just hit -8 here. Not bad but outside is nope nope nope. Just loaded both woodstoves and put on a pot of soup.

Hoping the damn tree doesn't blow down and slice the house in half. Luckily not many branches to catch the wind.

Kudos to any ski area/resort choosing to put the safety of their staff and guests above profits this weekend.

I have nothing but sympathy and respect for the front end staff, managers, and owners that need to explain to the excessively demanding public that having staff and guests in an alpine environment at -10*F and below with a 30+ MPH northwest wind is a really bad idea.

Maybe more southern areas don't have exposure values as low as the north country. But it is dang brutal right now in the north country. I just took my dog out for a few minutes and it is some of the lowest "real feel" that I have experienced. Mount Washington may approach, tie, or hit an all time low tonight.

Here's the deal: if the weather is so bad that a lift evac could result in severe hypothermia for guests waiting to be rescued and for the rescuers, it is probably a good idea to shut things down. This is a pretty usual situation, an entire region shutting down most lifts for extreme cold doesn't happen every season.

Let's look at the winners and losers from today. Who got the most lifts and terrain open:

The winners:

Gore: opened all scheduled lifts.

Mad River Glen: Opened all scheduled lifts.

Okemo: opened access to all terrain except South Face

Whiteface: No summit but kept the gondola running all day.

Mount Snow: Maintained summit access and access to all main face and Carinthia terrain. Sunbrook and North Face remained closed.

The losers:

Killington/Pico: Pico didn't open and Killington only ran 3 lifts despite having long lines. They could've easily opened more lifts that were less wind exposed than what they had open.

Stratton: only opened lower mountain. No summit access or Sun Bowl.

Smuggler's Notch: Did not open.

Jay Peak: Did not open.

Wildcat: Did not open.

Everyone else is somewhat in the middle.

it’s a tough call in today’s environment. Lots of second guessing no matter which way you go.

Ouch just had half a tree taken down. One half crashed in a windstorm other half leaning towards the bedroom. On a positive note I'll be cutting firewood in the spring.

I of course would love to start up the chainsaw to chop chop chop, but that can't fix a smashed window.

There is certainly public pressure to "do something", and then there's a lot of groupthink, so when one resort closes or mostly closes, a bunch of others seem to follow. Hmm what does that sound similar to from the last 2 years? Yep I thought so. And just like with covid, if you call anything into question then you are a bad person who wants people to die, or in this case to get frostbite.
