Ski Bowl 3.0 at Gore

Ski Bowl update:
The halfpipe is finally being removed, as it has not been used as a "halfpipe" in years, and will make a lot more room for beginners on the face of the Village Chair slope, along with the removal of the XC trails that ridiculously wove throughout the Village Chair and Hudson Chair. (y) ⛷️

While a good move for the ski bowl my dog really enjoyed running up and down the halfpipe during the summer :ROFLMAO: . Is the goal to have a Skibowl eventually be the learning area like Bear Den in Whiteface?

No, the learning area is at the big boy hill that is serviced by the new Bear Cub Quad chair.

Pipe dragons are really expensive and it doesn’t seem like there’s much interest in half pipes anymore.

Listening to a podcast the other day with freeskier Alex Hall he was saying how there are only a handful of competition caliber halfpipes left in the world. Apparently only 2 people are properly qualified to create these half pipes and the expense/work involved is intense. The genre seems to be dying a slow death.

Pipes got too big and became a place for pro's only. Back when 16' was the norm, an intermediate to advanced skier or rider could actually have some fun in one. Then in crept up to 18' and eventually 22' with nearly 4' of that being vertical. If you stand in a superpipe like that it feels like a canyon not something to play in. Carinthia keeps a fairly mellow "mini" pipe next to their superpipe and it's always being used. The pipe dragon bit that RA brings up is fair but a lot of mountains did invest in one back in the early aughts only for them to go totally unused once competition superpipes hit 22". It's kind of a shame, smaller pipes can be a lot of fun and are great for mastering edge control. I miss the days when Mountain Creek used to host the US open.

Didn’t Sarah Burke die from a half pipe fall?

That’s quite the investment for a comp venue that the public isn’t going to use.

Usually halfpipes just melt or go up in smoke. 🤔
Are they just gonna fill a long hole in?
